The Official Vocaloid Thread

This thread is to discuss the awesomesauce...thing that is vocaloid!

What is vocaloid you ask?

Vocaloid (ボーカロイド Bōkaroido?) is a singing synthesizer. Its signal processing part was developed through a joint research project led by Kenmochi Hideki at the Pompeu Fabra University in Spain in 2000 and originally was not intended to be a full commercial project. Backed by the Yamaha Corporation it developed the software into the commercial product "Vocaloid".[1][2] The software enables users to synthesize singing by typing inlyrics and melody. It uses synthesizing technology with specially recorded vocals of voice actors or singers. To create a song, the user must input the melody and lyrics. A piano roll type interface is used to input the melody and the lyrics can be entered on each note. The software can change the stress of the pronunciations, add effects such as vibrato, or change the dynamics and tone of the voice. Each Vocaloid is sold as "a singer in a box" designed to act as a replacement for an actual singer. The software was originally only available in Englishand Japanese, but as of Vocaloid 3, SpanishChinese and Korean have been added.

The software is intended for professional musicians as well as light computer music users and has so far sold on the idea that the only limits are the users' own skills.[3] Japanese musical groups Livetune of Victor Entertainment and Supercell of Sony Music Entertainment Japan have released their songs featuring Vocaloid as vocals. Japanese record label Exit Tunes of Quake Inc. also have released compilation albums featuring Vocaloids.[4][5] Artists such as Mike Oldfield have also used Vocaloids within their work for back up singer vocals and sound samples.[6]

Ignoring that minor wall of text, vocaloid is a singing synthesizer that uses real peoples pre-recorded voices to make new songs without the original voice singing them. As if it weren't odd enough Japan then decided to give the voices a physical form to complement the voice in the style of traditional anime in a slightly more realistic form.

Vocaloid rose in popularity quickly after it was introduced in both the East and the West. (A popular song that English speakers might know is levan Polka) Besides being used for music in Japan, vocaloid had some success in America and Europe in the form of the Nyan Cat meme. The song was originally made by daniwellP and was called Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!

After gaining footing in Japan, Crypton hosted a live concert featuring Hatsune Miku projected onto a complex screen backed up by a live band. And example of such a concert can be found here.  (Miku does not appear until the first song is over, so skip there if you feel the need to do so) Such concerts are still going on due to popularity and are a big part of what vocaloid is.

All in all, I am very passionate about vocaloid as a whole even though I only stumbled upon it due to related video surfing on youtube. Vocaloid songs can be very sad or happy, can have a heartbreaking or heartwarming story, and can be deep in meaning or just plain silly. Regardless, vocaloid is a very good thing to get into if you can get past some of the strange Japan there is embedded in it. (Which is a plus in my opinion!)

This thread is to discuss favorite songs, make clear the green is the enemy, explain to those who don't know what vocaloid is, and just discuss what makes vocaloid wonderful to you.
