What are your thoughts on designing for competition and esports?

I've been chewing on a question lately: Could StarCraft Brood War in its competitive form be re-made today?  Would a game designer intentionally leave in bugs if the community found a competitive edge to them, even at the cost of an accessible gameplay experience?  

I'm curious to any game designers in the forum if they've ever designed a competitive game, or a game that accidentally became competitive.  Was there a tension when you saw your players 'breaking' the game for their competition?  How did you go about designing for competition and esports in your game/
