That seemed to f ix it. Thanks to all
  • Can't get patch to 2.0.8, can't play

    #
For the past 40 hours or so, I'm stuck and can't play SC2. When I start the launcher, it wants to download 2.0.8. But then tries for a while and then bombs out saying to "check my internet connection"
  • I was hoping for something a bit more concrete in reply to All of it by DaveChurchill

    #
For example, one of your cited papers models one white unit against N black, and models optimal targeting strategies for white. Is there an obvious example from that, say a bunch of roaches against one specific protoss unit?
  • Any parallels for players? in reply to SC2 by DaveChurchill

    #
I can understand how the API makes Brood war a more useful package for your studies.
  • Sorry for making you think I was trolling in reply to Don't have to convince you, it's proven by DaveChurchill

    #
Thanks for the link to the paper on complexity. I'm not trying to argue. I think, IMHO, YMMV, etc. that we are approaching the limits of the engineering for parallel processing using sequential languages. I have no idea what the ...
  • Not convinced in reply to This isn't industry by DaveChurchill

    #
Careful, I read all three of your papers.I'm not convinced you are really in NP-hard space. At least I don't see it. Graph traversal is often only O(N), way better than NP. Similarly, searching is clearly poly-time.Clearly you believe that ...
  • Speed is over rated in reply to Lanauggae by DaveChurchill

    #
Except for build orders and APM, speed is not important. Oh, yeah, we are talking Computer Science here. Even there, except for modeling weather systems, NP-hard algorithms and the like, the engineer's time is far more expensive than computer cycles. ...
  • Programming language/environment choice? in reply to [AMA] Doing my PhD research in StarCraft AI, AMA! by DaveChurchill

    #
25 years ago, when I was trying to do a PhD, all the AI guys were arguing about prolog vs lisp as the implementation language. I tended to glaze over the issues, since AI then rarely did much more than ...
  • ASCII art? in reply to I'm getting all fired up! by jbigg2012

    If so, wow
  • Sure, how does one send a PM here in reply to OFFERING ASSISTANCE by Crystal_Zerg

    #
Sure, I'd love some coaching. I can't figure out how to send a PM.
  • I'll be low silver soon in reply to Good job, but some information on leagues for HotS by ntucker

    #
I'm sure I will soon sink down in silver. (twenty, 30, or below)I saw the notes on team liquid about smaller bronzes. But I figured I'd stay there, as I lost all five placement matches and all but one of ...
  • I thought I hated HoTS, but now I'm at the top of Silver

Maybe watching Day9 has made me a better gamer. I started playing Warcraft before it was "1", did WC2 and 3, and SC (no number) then SC2. I've been playing SC2 since it came out, playing on the ladder for ...
  • Stay in computer science in reply to Certainly! (: by makios

    #
Philosophy is a wonderful degree, but you can't get a job with it. Stay with Computer Science.Of course, CS is nearly as hard as engineering, so you won't have much time to play HOTS. I find it much harder to ...
  • I suck at HOTS in reply to Change to Leagues in HotS by Philosopher

    #
I've been a high-Bronze player for a couple of seasons. Yeah, I'll agree that its really hard to get out. I can get as high as 7th or so, and then lose some games and sink into the low teens. But ...
  • Ram is dirt cheap these days in reply to The important things by jbigg2012

    #
Its so cheap, its a sin to get less than 8GB. But I don't think SC2 will take advantage of more.I also see no evidence that SC2 uses multiple CPU cores well, so the 6 and 8 core AMD and ...
  • You can use calculus with a lot less work in reply to Calculus by Cabal

    #
I learned enough for engineering and CS the first time. But as a math major, you really should understand it, and it took me 3 times to really get it in my bones.
  • no LA for me either in reply to Since when? by zeek

    #
I never liked linear algebra and have never used it in the 40+ years I've been a professional developer. I'm sure it has some uses, but I never ran into them.
  • Math BS, Masters in CS in reply to Any computer science people out here? by Cabal

    #
Don't worry. Yes, there is math, especially in the analysis of algorithms class. That requires limits and a bit of calculus. But you can't get into any science or engineering without calculus. Plus, calculus is not that hard. By the ...
  • Some motor sports riders/drivers are atheletes in reply to It is not important. by Grunni

    #
I have not professionally raced cars, but I have professionally raced motorcycle, sometimes even at places you've heard of (Daytona). Riding a racing bike is serious exercise. You don't just sit on it and twist the throttle. You start by ...
  • Are SC2 pros "atheletes" and it is important

    #
Day9 recently tweeted a link to a Forbes interview where a Blizzard guy said that SC2 pros are "atheletes" http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2012/12/31/blizzard-game-director-dustin-browder-explains-why-starcraft-ii-pro-gamers-are-athletes/ Due to their mental and physical conditioning. It seems to me that up and coming sports or *sports are always trying ...
