Post first speed run time
SeriouslySurly Gaming and Streaming DK30 Spring 2019 0 1
Description
Been wanting to speedrun something for a while, so I’ve settled on an oldie but goodie Baldur’s Gate. The most recent patch obsoleted the current route so I will have to re-route a significant section before practicing and then posting. Main goals are to figure out the route and post a time no matter how awful.
Recent Updates
Completed my project today! Had an excellent run this afternoon and somehow, assuming it gets confirmed, I will be the top time for the Baldur’s Gate speed run!! I’ve attached the video in the links. I also have completed a pretty big add-on goal of making a tutorial for the run, since there really wasn’t one available. So all in all, a good 30 days of project. I have definitely enjoyed reading through all of the things folk are doing, and really appreciate the kind words in discord. Thanks all and good luck on your projects!
Been a hectic week with work deadlines and a friend moving countries but managing to stay mostly on track. Notes and pathing that I’ll use for the final attempts are all done. Not saying its gonna get me a world record but it’s gonna be close. Gonna look a little closer at potentially streaming/recording more process videos especially as I move on to a game that doesn’t have something for me to follow (BG: Siege of Dragonspear). I just made a first stab at a tutorial video for the run. There’s a few false starts and plenty of little things I’d like to fix, but for something I did on a whim this evening to unwind, I’m oddly proud of my stutter-y less than focused rambling through the run. I did post it to youtube if you can stand 1:30 of someone ad-libbing instructions, link is in the links. Last piece for this week is that the final attempts will be taking place this Saturday (May 4th), and I will most likely be live (twitch) for most of it. Here’s hoping that some fresh video content will draw a few folk from the woodwork to come join the speedrun family.
Have notes through chapter 5. Cloakwood mines are going to be a definite sticking point due to some randomness. (Yeah dice rolling!). Did some practice through one tricky section but need to spend some more time with the boss. I haven’t failed him yet (cross fingers) but it is slow and messy. Definitely need to finish notes for the rest of the game because it feels weird not having anything else to move on to. Also, I did update my twitch channel and will occasionally be streaming my practice. Still tweaking some video looks and getting up to speed on how to not make this look like a complete amateur, but I am so… Link is in the links.
Got OBS to capture BG and display timer so all should be good there. Will dink around with the sound balancing later. Worked on notes through chapter 3. Feeling good about the first 8 minutes of play (on par with current WR). Extra bit I’m adding on at the end is to pretty up my notes and add some pictures so someone else might be able to use them. Going to be a slow week due to travel, but putting some extra time in today and when I get back should keep me on track.
Also added link to current notes as the Website link.
OBS is installed, though having issues capturing BG’s footage. Livesplit is also installed and initial time markers are set and working. Videos have been watched and initial notes have been taken through chapter 3. Movement through Naskill mines and end chapter 1 fight will need some practice. Hoping to feel comfortable through chapter two by the end of this weekend.
