Myz's terrarium habitat thingy.
Myz Craft and Cosplay DK30 Spring 2019 2 3
Description
I’ve been wanting to make my room look less bland and add a terrarium for the longest but, kept putting it off. But now’s a good a time as any so, time to get to it llamao. I bought a 20 gal long tank form a coworker a few years ago and got a coconut fiber brick a month or so ago when I moved out of my parents house recently. My animal options in the past have been, Pacman frog, Leopard Gecko, Box Tortoise, Hermit Crabs. But Uromastyx, other types of geckos, salamanders and newts have piqued my interest as of late. So yeet, a lot of options and decisions to make but whichever road I choose, I’ll hopefully get there. Since this is my first time doing something like this, I won’t be doing anything too elaborate, just nice and simple.
Recent Updates
So the decor has pretty sizable holes in it and the last thing I’d want to happen is the crestie to hide and then either get stuck or get hurt so, I’m blocking the holes with quite a bit of moss that I balled up and stuffed in there. Moss Blockade
I ended up getting some vines at petsmart for like 9 cents and I’ll most likely go back and get a few more but Yeee it’s finally done. It’s pretty simple but honestly I’m super happy with it ^-^ I did put a cardboard flap on the part where the screen goes because the side wouldn’t stay up after removing the screen so I’ll see how this works out. Anyways yeeeet here is it!! FINISHED PRODUCT ^-^
Before The coconut brick hit a snag and didn’t really expand in the time that it should have so I left it over night to do its thing and it finally worked. I’m gonna let a little bit of it dry right now and put the rest up in the garage for when I need it. I also looked at a bunch of videos and in those the people didn’t put near as much water as I did so I added another brick :)) and now I have a bunch
Cocofiber mat I cut up the mat to fit the part of the base that I’m using and then, hot glued pieces to make a low wall of sorts. The gecko’s aren’t diggers/burrowers so I’m not worried about them accidentally consuming (somehow) the dried glue. It’ll also be buried so honestly ¯\(ツ)/¯
So I am reusing my roommates stand that he had for a previous aquarium and even tho its a tad woobly it holds the tank well and doesn’t take up too much space in my already small room. I’ll most likely end up moving it to the corner if the wobbling gets to be too much but until then it stays where its at. Stand
Since the tank has a sliding lid and not a regular one, there’s really no lip on the side to keep the substrate from falling out so I got a coconut fiber mat and I’ll put that on the bottom of the tank to contain it. Also maybe I may use it on the a side or two of the tank but I’ll have to see what it looks like inside. Tank
First off I love this decor and despite it being for aquariums I’m going to put it in here cause it has a nice jungle-esque feel to it. I’ll add fake vines and a hiding spot or two around the time I get the little guy but for now these are what I’m gonna go with uwu.
Couldn’t find and sphagnum moss at any if the pet stores near me, which is honestly surprising but ok, so I’ll going to try this green moss and see how it holds up. I’ll def get some later when I have the money but for now this’ll do. Aquarium Decor & Green Moss
Since the tank will be one its side and not down flat, there’s no real way for the substrate to stay inside and not fall out so I’m thinking of using this mat to make a containment/barrier to keep that from happening. Cocofiber mat
I’ll start putting this all together when I get off from work this evening and do some update pics on it as well but yeet I’m honestly super stoked to get this going.
Man I’m so sorry for the lack of updates but April was one hell of a month with a lot of stuff going down and I kept having to push this project back multiple times. I did work on it little by little and am happy with the decisions that I chose for it. I ultimately decided on going the lizard route just because they’re generally easier to care for than most and not as demanding. And since I’m a beginner at this, I’m shooting for a crested eyelash gecko pet and making the habitat to fit its needs. Reason being that my house averages in the 65F-75F range with my room being on the cooler side and those temps are no problem for the crested as opposed to leopards and beardies who need it to be warmer I could get bulbs and lamps but those are too pricey for me rn and my budget won’t allow it for a long while. Also neither the leopards nor the beardies do well with the coconut bark, which I have a bunch of so that was also a turn off :((.
Estimated Timeframe
Apr 5th - May 12th
Week 1 Goal
Research and Gathering
The first and most intensive week during the month. I’ll be gathering all sorts of information on environment types, plants, substrates, animals, lights and anything else I can come up with.
Week 2 Goal
Planning and Designing
There’s a lot that I want to do with the habitat, unfortunately not everything is suitable to go together. So this week will focus on taking the information I gathered last week, and organizing them into separate categories where based on compatibility.
Week 3 Goal
Purchasing and Construction Pt 1
I’ll be working all day everyday from the 14th-21st so I’ll continue this the week after.
This week will focus on purchasing the most basic items on the list needed and, putting the whole habitat together. Mainly substrate, lights, plants, and/or hiding places/basking area (if I choose to buy an animal to live in it).
Week 4 Goal
Purchasing and Construction Pt 2
Continuing work from the previous week, anything extra to go in the tank like a water feature, driftwood etc, as well as the animal if not purchased the week before.
