Learn to draw garden design to design a garden for my new house
lroumen Other DK30 Fall 2019 2 2
Description
I have built a 3D model in sketch up for my new house) (Dk30 fall 2018 and spring 2019) and now the contractor is building it, it is time to design a garden for it. It will feature drawing in sketch books and utilization of tracing paper
Recent Updates
Yes, the design is done!!! Superhappy :):D:D:D:D:):):) I cannot wait to get started on it. First I have to wait for the house to be finished building (end of the year, early next year).
I coloured using alcohol markers to get a rough idea on the colourspace. The flowers will feature more vibrant colours, but I only had nature coloured markers… I should go to the shop again :).

With locations of the zones
Sight (by approximation)
Taking all the good parts I used new tracing paper to draw the hardscape first (stones, driveway, paths, terraces). Then with a second tracing paper I started to fill in trees around it, then plants.
I am quite happy with how the design process is going. It took quite some steps to handle the zones, but in the end I got things done.
With the wishes in hand and tracing paper on top of the house layout, I started to sketch different zones. Not many are good, but in the end we used 4-5 with the best ideas and merged them into one.
Example of zoning below. Might be bad resolution picture
Week 3. Day 1 After getting some nice tips from the community, I start by making an overview of the zones we want to have in our garden. They are many, but it is an important starting point before any drawings are made
- A terrace with a dining table
- a lounge place where we can put our lounge chairs
- playzones throughout the garden
- a quiet spot preferably with japanese influence to relax
- a water feature
- flowerbeds all over
- places to sit all over; benches?
- small place where we can grow vegetables
- small place for fruit
- herbal site close to the kitchen
- lawn for playing
- a meadow to have low upkeep
- a place to store garden items
And limitations of course
- kitchen looks out to the terrace
- herbs accessible from ktichen/terrace
- vegetables accessible from terrace
- kitchen looks out to the various playzones
- living room looks out to something nice
- play room looks out to something nice
Week 2. Last day. This week starts my week 3.
This is the base of my house design on which I will put new sketches with tracing paper. It links back to my spring entry: Building a 3D model of my house in Sketchup including interior design
Week 2, end of the week. The freehand perfect circle challenge. No design work, just FFFFUUUUNNNN.
And I get to learn what I do wrong while drawing those circles.
Week 2, end of the week. Next to making sketches of trees I should also learn to write better and clearly. After all, legible annotation is important for designs. I am trying to keep it up during the grading of my drawing too.
Week 2, officially start of week 3 I seem to be on schedule for now (since I am at week 2). My drawing becomes loads better and the trees start to look elegant and smart. I feel more at ease to experiment and to get more ideas on what I like to draw and the designs for trees I want to make.
Week 1 of drawing, officially week 2 in the project. Now the fun starts. I start drawing all kinds of freehand circles, some more ovalshaped than others. By doing a proper branch design I can hide the ovalness in most cases. I run into issues where I am not certain anymore whether the freehand circle actually adds anything if it will be prominently visible, so I have to alternate pencils, using soft 4H to draw the circle and HB or about that type to make the branches.
I try to keep as many notes for each tree as needed, in order to later reflect properly and learn to improve.
Making updates. Woohoo!
First week starts with sketching freehand circles and doing parallel and intersecting lines. Nothing really special, but practice is important. I got all kinds of things for drawing. Tracing paper, alcohol markers, pencils of every type from 4H to 4B, simple markers, white gummy marker. I already have a sketchbook to use :).
Week 2 is about making designs I like so I try to vary the leaves and branches and go for alternatives to the circle start. I have no firm conclusions yet on what I like most but I will make pictures to post soon
It is tough to draw the perfect circle freehand. I am trying to get better at it while at the same time I also use the circles to make tree patterns.
After one week I have had some progress in stability of drawin
I created my entry a week too late but I managed to already have progress. I got some pens from work, tracing paper is ordered and I am watching several videos on drawing garden designs and garden feng shui.
Many ideas on what to work on!!
