Read Star Wars Comics
Satan Visual Art DK30 Winter 2020 3 4
Description
I am going to attempt to read all 52 of Dark Horse Comics’ “Knights of the Old Republic” series! Part of this is to get some additional background for one of my favorite games of all time, and part of it is to immerse myself in the Old Republic Era of Star Wars to potentially maybe, some day, either write a/several short story/ies, or to host a campaign in that universe using the tabletop rules! And, a secondary, simpler goal, is to try to read things for fun again, even something as ‘benign’ as a comic.
Recent Updates
Well, I finished it all. I finished reading “Knights of the Old Republic - War”, and with that have finally completed my DK30! That last 5 Issue series was actually quite the little trip of emotions.
Just finished reading both “Unseen, Unheard” and “Shadows and Light”, both of which are kind of ‘mini-stories’ that deal with part of the background lore for Knights of the Old Republic.
SPOILERS BELOW
Shadows and Light is an interesting take, and a short version of Episodes I-III of SW. It shows excellently how much you can condense a story without losing the core of it. It also deals in great detail with ‘The Great Hunt’ - A jedi organized event to try to wipe out the Terentatek, which feed on Force-sensitive and Force-user blood. The Terentatek was always a fascinating organism to me, but because you are so strong in Knights of the Old Republic they are not quite as challenging as these comics make them out to be.
“Unseen, Unheard” is the story of how Catharr was wiped out, and all but one of the Miraluka on it. I always wondered what it looked like, since you never go there in the games, and by god is it gorgeous.
Added some things to my project for the last week, and wrote up a document that will go into my ‘Results and Reflections’ now that its still all fresh.
So … I finished the series. It was a satisfying ending, and getting closure right at the end of it all, with most if not all story lines converging. Now to write a roundup, and then I’m done!!
SPOILERS BELOW
Just finished reading Issue #44 and I love that we’re getting some backstory not just for Jarael, but the galaxy and how Slavery works within it. On top of that we also get the backstory for Revan and Malak. 10/10
Aaaaaaand Art Quality goes up again. It’s different, but definitely awesome. And I think the pacing of the story has gotten better too. At Issue #42 now :D
Well, managed to get past my Week 3 goal! Despite the art changes, I’m looking forward to delving into the backstory of a character who’s so far been mostly devoid of it. But my criticisms become more … numerous. The longer the series goes on.
They went ahead to change the artstyle again… And then not even five issues later, again. This last one especially is … not pretty to look at at all.
Before I get back to reading, I wanna give an update on what I did yesterday, because while it’s not directly related to the project, it’s project adjacent.
I was in a shop yesterday to pick up the Eberron rulebook for D&D 5e, and on a whim I asked them whether they have the SW rulebooks by Fantasy Flight Games. I then spent a rough … hour or so inside the shop leafing through the core rulebooks (Age of Rebellion, Force and Destiny and Edge of the Empire). I learned a lot, even talked a little bit to the shop clerk since no one else was there (my first … good face to face interaction in roughly a month with another human ><).
I learned a lot, despite the books being in German (and me preferring the English ones, since they tend to be more compact than translations), and resolved to do some more research, since the whole point of this project was to research for a tabletop game using those rules.
I hadn’t planned on it, but it was a really good experience. After going home I then spent another few hours researching the rules, the system, and figuring out some of its pro’s and con’s compared to other systems I know (like Shadowrun, D&D (3.5e and 5e), Dark Heresy, Exalted etc.). Despite not being within the defined scope of the project, I think that it was likely the ‘best’ day of the project.
So I’m up to Issue #30 and it really is a weird series of comics. The story is still excellent, but the change in art style has really made it less enjoyable. It’s not that it’s bad per se, but it’s just different, less appropriate in a way.
As for the story, where I am now it makes you wonder how this goes on for another 20 issues!
Finally finished Week 2’s workload. Still a little sad about the art quality, but the extra information I’m getting on Taris and the Mandalorian Wars more than makes up for that. What I find most interesting is the idea of
SPOILER WARNING
Dark cabals within the Jedi order, acting on prophecies that date back to whenever. It’s an interesting concept, and if I ever do end up running a SW game, this will definitely be something I integrate.
Okay. My GOD does the art quality deteriorate in Issue #19! Same story though, but not getting that same kick as I did from the previous issues.
Alright, just finished reading Issue #18, and am going to call it a night. The amount of excellent art in the past 2-3 issues has been phenomenal, and the story writing is really frigging good.
Again, comparing this to the other series I read… the difference is really night and day. The characters are excellent, you’re slowly learning about them in stages at a good enough pace to keep you interested without overwhelming you with information.
Finally seeing Carth Onasi and Admiral Saul Karath! Background for KOTOR 1 and 2!!!
So apparently Comic #13 is where the new arc starts, and probably one of the most interesting parts of the Old Republic Era:
SPOILER WARNING
The Mandalorian Wars.
Didn’t make a lot of progress in the past few days on the project, but I still consider it a win due to the reason why.
Basically, this week I’ve been struggling with the flu, but whatever excess energy I did have I put into a little self care (throwing out some garbage, laundry, etc.), as well as writing something I’ve been putting off basically since early January. I’m now 80% finished with that (side)project!
Rolling up to Issue #12 now :D
As bad as “Star Wars: The Old Republic” was, structure wise anyway, that’s probably how good the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” comics are. These really are a joy to read.
So, I’m sick again, hurray, but decided to start reading some more to take my mind off the being sick.
AND ITS REAL EASY IF THE COMICS ARE AS GOOD AS THIS ONE!
Holy crap I love the culmination of the first seven comics, it’s just so good! And the visuals! :dayJoy: Feeling super motivated now.
So, I breezed through six issues like it was nothing. These ones seem to be structured so much better and the story is really gripping, touching on various aspects that are touched on in the movies and games but in a much more vivid and interesting way. I CANNOT wait to see where the story goes in Issues #6 onwards :dayJoy:
Alright, I finished “The Old Republic”, all six issues. It shines an interesting light on some of the possibilities that exist within the SW universe that I haven’t seen anywhere else. The ideas that stem from this set of six issues are manifold, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the “Knights of the Old Republic” comics hold!
Finished reading issues #4 and #5! These three are actually waaaaaaaaaaaay less chaotic than the previous three and immediately sucked me in. But that might be my personal bias, since it talks about the [REDACTED] instead of the [REDACTED].
Finished Issue #3. It’s apparently the prelude to what happens in the SWTOR MMO, which, personally, I find to be kinda cool. I mean I still don’t know most of the characters in this, but I’m looking forward to finding out in the game, since I recently picked it back up.
On to: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Blood of the Empire
Just finished reading the second issue, finally getting a grip on what the story is actually supposed to be!
Started reading the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” series of comics before reading Knights of the Old Republic. So far all I can say is that it seems a bit… confused? It dives right into something in a chaotic way that I am in no way used to. But it is interesting, and there’s a lot of names I know, which is nice.
So, I’ve found a way to read it all, I wasn’t actually sure there was a good way.
