3D Printing and Mini-Painting for D&D

kendragon Craft and Cosplay DK30 Winter 2020 4 4

Description

Aim to scope out set times for enjoying my hobby. Mini painting in particular really helps with my anxiety and so I want to try to incorporate more hobby time into my schedule. Hoping to make progress on printing and painting for a couple of D&D/Pathfinder encounters down the road and try out some new painting techniques. For those that are curious, I’m 3D Printing with an Anycubic Photon S (resin printer).

Project feels successfully completed! Didn’t totally finish painting the goblins to the quality I want but I made so much progress. More than I could hope for really. Here are the final glamor shots of the goblins (I finished other minis but didn’t have time to take nice photos today).

Project nearly completed! Plan on wrapping things up tomorrow with a few minor detail touch ups on the goblins and some pictures with some better lighting.

Made some excellent progress on many minis. Goblins aren’t totally complete but I’m really happy with where they are: table ready and lots of room for more details.

Here are some pictures with bad lighting until the good ones are up tomorrow…

Week 4 is going great, extending until the 26th instead of the 22nd (will be away for the weekend so can’t paint).

Make some progress on a handful of other HeroForge minis - they’re not hear done but any progress feels goos. These always take be a long time. I tend to stick to terrain painting because I can complete more minis in a small period of time.

Really excited about the progress with my goblins too. They’re in the stage of miniature painting where things are looking kinda ugly still. Really excited to get over that hump and make them look super awesome (detail stuff). I’ve mostly finished 5 other lighter-skinned goblins that they’ll mix really well with. The challenging part will be painting all of the bases so that they look like they’re from the same place.

Will post pictures of all of the goblins together regardless if they’re done or not soon!

Week 3 started out challenging then became super awesome and eye opening. Last week I started Cross Fit, yesterday I started a 21 days of Meditation challenge (I made another DK30 project for that), and I’ve been really busy at work and at home! AHH! However, the habit of giving myself an hour or so 3-4 times a week has been INCREDIBLE for my mental health. Last week getting over the hump of feeling like I’ve been procrastinating and realizing that I’ve really only been spending about 3-4 hours total a week on the hobby after work has been a revelation. It feels so much better to not be tempted to spend all of my home time on work, which often leads to immense amounts of stress. I’ve still be completing my work responsibilities, I just feel less pressure to go above and beyond all the time and make myself burn out. It’s really helped me evaluate how I spend my free time. I feel so much more happy this week (although that could be from all of the extra endorphins from Cross Fit). Thinking of extending project a week or so… Picture updates to come!

Week 2 progress going well. However, getting into the habit of taking time to paint after work has created a situation where I use painting to procrastinate! I have a lot of work responsibilities that often spills into the after-work hours… it is yet to be seen if this is good or bad. It’s nice to create boundaries and not over-extend, but it’s still procrastination. I will continue to monitor this in the following weeks. I’ve hit my printing goals for the first two weeks. Completed all week two prepping tasks. It’s all painting from here on out! I don’t expect to complete everything pictured. I’m going to prioritize the goblins over the next two weeks.

Four prints complete and one more in-progress. All printed minis have been prepped and primed. Even was able to start some base coats on some goblins. Feeling good about the progress. Had some extra time at home to print this week because I was home sick with a bad infection. Silver lining was being able to pull off more prints than I otherwise would have been able to at this point.

Estimated Timeframe

Jan 22nd - Feb 26th

Week 1 Goal

Prep stl files for printing - aim to have 4-6 big prints ready to sustain the month. Try to get 1-2 big printing sessions this week. Clean, sand, prep, and prime any minis printed this week.

Week 2 Goal

Print another set of minis. Clean, sand, prep, and prime any minis printed this week. Begin base coating minis that will be used in the next upcoming encounter. Aim for 2-3 painting sessions afterwork this week.

Week 3 Goal

Focus on continuing to paint already printed & prepped minis. Aim for 3-4 painting sessions after work this week. Want to focus painting sessions on goblin minis.

If timing works out: print another set of minis. Clean, sand, prep, and prime any minis printed this week. No more new printing after this week.

Week 4 Goal

Continue to paint already printed & prepped minis. Continue to prioritize painting goblins. Aim for 3-4 painting sessions after work this week.
