Do a StarCraft 2 Speedrun
Marth Gaming and Streaming DK30 Quarantine 2020 4 3
Description
Speedrunning is something that amazes me for years now and I always wanted to try. SC2 is a game I am very familiar with altough not so skilled but I will try my best to get on the leaderboard. I have not yet decided on grinding an IL or a complete game run. That will be part of the project I guess
Recent Updates
They got accepted. https://www.speedrun.com/sc2wol/Liberation_Day
All three of them are now in the leaderboard. That means this project is now completed and I intend to pursue speedrunning further. I already found a few things I can get a good time in. I would say my longterm goal is to fill out all IL runs in the 3 StarCraft 2 campaigns but that will take a while
Overall I think I played the mission more than 100 times and also played way more SC2 than in the past. And I gained some understanding of the SC2 Map Editor and how Blizzard scripts their missions.
Runs have been recorded and submitted to speedrun.com Hope they get approved. Times were Casual - 2:01 Normal - 2:10 Hard - 2:16
Getting a time in hard was a bit suprising, while I had a lot of 2:02 on casual. Results are not very impressive but it is a starting point and I am happy about that.
I played quite a few rounds of the first level but somehow 2:02 on Casual is currently my ceiling. I just can’t get down that one or two more seconds. But my kiting is still bad so I can somewhat improve. Next focus will Normal for a bit.
Did some more practice runs but without any improvement. Seems like I hit a wall and I am not sure yet what I do wrong. A thing i noticed is that ongoing dialogue is blocking the map from finishing which can add seconds to your time. That’s annoying.
Progress. New PB on Casual at 2:01. Was even able to repeat it. Still 3 seconds away from the WR. And I have to evaluate where I lose those seconds.
I believe my stutterstepping is not good enough and I need to split the marines better on the last focus fire.
I was pretty unproductive this week but I did some speedrunning related things. As I plan to do more than just IL in the future I started to work my way through the campaign to unlock everything for the archives and also remind myself what the missions are and how to beat them fast. Also put a bit work in the first level but no new records achieved.
Yesterday only played a game and watched other runs. Today I got a new personal best on Normal at 2:10 Getting there slowly :D And I have a few ideas on how to improve the route. But still need to grind out more runs.
Huge progress. I was watching the WR run a bit and noticed a few things I was doing wrong. Fixed that now and improved both of my times Casual now at 2:02 Normal at 2:11
This actually puts me in range of the current leaderboard but I still want to improve a few seconds and then start working on Hard/Brutal And at some point I have to record it ofc
More practice in Casual and Normal. A 2:04 and a 2:19 but this time they did not die in the last second :D
Made some practice runs in the Level: Liberation Day on Casual and Normal Best time was 2:07 © and a 2:17(N) where Rainor died in the last second.
Leaderboard times are 1:58-2:02 on Casual and 2:05 - 2:13 on Normal so still lots of work ahead of me to shave off those seconds. Hard: 2:13 - 2:33 Brutal: 2:14 - 2:31
I want to tackle the other difficulties once I got the hang of the easy ones.
My StarCraft focus the past few days has been on casting, not playing but I did play a mutation coop game today. And I decided to tackle the first 2 IL missions for this project first in Casual difficulty then working upwards.
Have been playing a bit of SC2 the past few days but not really focused on improving or working on speedrunning.
Played some more StarCraft today and I am pretty certain I am only going for IL runs for now. A whole campaign would be too much for me atm.
Continuing to play SC2 to get rust off and get more familiar with the campaign missions. It has been a few years since I last played it.
I did play a few games of SC2 today to get the rust off. Not yet satisfied but I am getting my speed back a little. I never was a good player. Diamond is the highest league I reached but I rarely played any matches.
Had a few tries at the first mission of Wings of Liberty and as expected this will take some time to get to a similar level as the people in the speedrun.com leaderboard.
