First chapter of a book (Kronos)

LucianoTV Writing DK30 Quarantine 2020 1 1

Description

I want to add to the story that I’ve been creating the past few months by finishing one chapter (or atleast finding out what I need in order to finish a chapter). I need to start by adding accurate atmosphere and aesthetics. My story right now consists of characters, actions, and events but very little descriptive. For example, I have things like character names and places, such as “Training Camp”, in an outline and I even have dialog but no way for the reader to know what the training camp looks like.

Unfortunately I was unable to finish, a school project came up and took most of my time, but the more I wrote I also felt like I wasn’t quite ready to put my story into words. I’m going to go back to story boarding for a while.

Well, after one week, I have both good news and bad news. The good news is I’ve made serious progress on completing the first chapter of my book. I’ve reached about the 75% mark for what I’ve written down and the last 25% isn’t difficult to write, I just need some more character work. I’ve developed all of my characters that I needed for this chapter, I just want to make sure their personalities and interactions with each other are how I want them to be. I’ve read the first chapter of Lord of the Rings, and I plan on reading the first chapter of Game of Thrones once I can find the copy I seem to have lost :’) . I’m pretty confident I was overestimating how much of the atmosphere I need to describe in the first chapter. The bad news, as you can probably tell from the above paragraph, is that my goals are a complete mess. I’ve done most of my progress out of order and I will probably continue to do things out of order. But, I am confident I will finish the first chapter by the end of 30 days. If anything, I learned that for this project (and future chapters of my book) its better to find the large goal, and come up with small goals one at a time as I work towards the larger goal.

I got over excited and wrote most of the first chapter (atleast what I could without creating the final characters of my week 2 goal). I realized when writing descriptives for characters, it was easier because there was something I wanted their descriptions to say, for example I described how a character’s jacket had holes that had been stitched together, because I wanted to show the character couldn’t afford new clothes but was still responsible enough to take care of his old clothes. Because there was something I wanted to show through the description, that made it easier. When describing most of the setting, there are less characteristics that are important to what the chapter is trying to say. And because of this, while I want the reader to have the same view as me, creating this view becomes very tedious. I want to read how other authors construct their scenery before moving onto developing mine more, so I’ll be switching my week 2 and week 1 goals :) .

Estimated Timeframe

Apr 20th - May 20th

Week 1 Goal

Finish my first attempt at the atmosphere of the scenes I have designated for the first chapter/arc.

Week 2 Goal

Create the main characters who will be in the first chapter (I have about 5 out of 8 completely developed and another 1 partially developed as of creating this post). I’d like to develop them to the point where I can write them into the story. As well as read intros to other stories to see how other authors have setup scenes/atmospheres.

Week 3 Goal

Finish developing the characters from week 2 by completing their backstories and relevance to the world. Reflect on other author’s choices for scene setup

Week 4 Goal

Review and make changes to the atmosphere/scene based on finished character information and new knowledge based on setup from other authors.
