DrYuri GameDev DK30 Quarantine 2020 4 3

Description

I tried to play around with game development in the past but always wanted to do too much too fast. “Lets make a 3d game in UE4” type of stuff. Plan for this dk30 project is to keep it simple and create a basic 2d game. I will use Godot engine as i heard a lot of good things about it from my friends that has done a couple of game jams. I am keeping my plan quite open ended as i don’t know how much will i be able to create in a month. I will spend the first week getting to know the editor and check a few tutorials, define the game in second week and make it in the 3rd and 4th weeks. My goal is to work on project about 7h per week.

Final update!

We made it! I finished my game and learned a lot. I am really happy with the result. I worked way more than 7h per week but since it was fun it was worth it. Here are a few screenshots and my game if anyone wants to try it. (You can replace exe with godot engine exe in project zip if you do not wish to run mine)

Week 3 update!

I am really happy with progress i have made so far! I have added some style to the level, improved points and upgraded health system. The last week will be focused on content, menus and hopefully adding some “juice” to the game!

No video for this week but a playable demo with source code for all those interested. Have fun! (Controls: left and right arrow, space jump, R attack and E dodge)

For all those who do not wish to run my exe you can download official godot engine https://godotengine.org/download/windows and replace my ninjaGame.exe with godot engine exe. Feel free to check the source code as well!

Week 2 update!

I am half way done and project is progressing really well. Main issue i have is that i keep seeing improvements and cool things i could add but i know i will run out of time if don’t keep the scope under control. I implemented items to pick up, score, health, a bit of music and sound effects and i started to design the first (or only) level.

Here is a short video of the progress i have made:

Since i started a week late this is now the end of my week 1! I must say I’ve really enjoyed learning about game making. I downloaded Godot engine and went through most of the official tutorials (tile maps, sprite animations, collision detection, collision layers and masks, input handling, signals/events, raycast, lights and shadows…) My plan was to work 1 hour per day but during the last weekend i probably clocked in 10 hours and around 14 hours in 7 days so great result! Here is video of my work in progress https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLm5De4sp50&feature=youtu.be

My plan for week 2 is to define gameplay mechanics, write a really short story / backstory (a few sentences or paragraphs) and define how many levels i want / can do. I need to have my basic game loop done in week 2 and then spend week 3 and 4 on small stuff that still takes some (or a lot of) time like menus, pause, win/lose screen, making it pretty…

Estimated Timeframe

May 1st - May 30th

Week 1 Goal

Familiarize myself with Godot editor and check a few beginner tutorials.

Week 2 Goal

Define gameplay, game mechanics, win/lose conditions. Define how many levels i want/can make and write a short story for the game (a few sentences). I want to have most of my systems defined and core systems implemented.

Week 3 Goal

Make splash screen, menu, and end game screen.

Week 4 Goal

Make it pretty and stable!
