Create a One Shot Escape Room/RPG

Comrade OO GameDev DK30 Fall 2020 1 1

Description

My goal is to create a homebrew rpg setting and campaign or oneshot for friends/family to play through, loosely inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss. I plan to work out the major structure, puzzles, and characters who players will encounter. By the end of the month I want to be ready to start running the campaign.

we have a working prototype! I have scheduled a playtest with my family, we are going to play during Thanksgiving. I will probablycontinue to work on the game, test it, tweak it, and get it to tip top shape, but it feels good to have a rough finished product. Thanks to my accountability group!

The script for running through the game is complete! (Needs edits, some of the events are incomplete or lacking), but I feel ready to take a group of players through.

Final Tasks-

  1. Schedule a run of the game with family.
  2. Create a guide for the combat moments.
  3. Final edits and notes on the script for the game.
  4. Make a slide show for the adventure (optional, but nice).

It is taking me more time to fully script out the adventure than I expected. I have it all in my head, all that is required now is for me to get it down on the page. I am still hopeful that I will be able to get everything together and should be set for my week 4 goal of scheduling the first playtest with family/friends. May also want to create a slide show to help make the visuals clear for players.

Finished my character creator in google forms! I like how it runs and think everything looks polished. Happy.

At the end of week 2 I have fully plotted out the puzzles/challenges for my players. The layout and format of the game are fully set. I even found time to sketch out a map of the ruined castle. Went more in-depth with the character creation process as well as began on character sheets. Feel like I am in a good place, next week I will be focusing on scripting the adventure and each encounter as well as adding polish and flavor to the game presentation.

At the end of week one I an happy with progress. Set up basics of system and structure of the adventure. Put together the basics of the character creation form https://forms.gle/MirPxk1cM94khhVa9 Now i really need to focus on figuring out the puzzles/challenges/combat for the adventure, writing down key info and descriptions.

Have researched several different systems. working in a universal system will be too complex, and overwhelming for my players (new to table top RPG’s). Checked out many one page RPG’s and I think that that kind of simple system should be my focus. Now I am brainstorming character creation and system rules.

Estimated Timeframe

Oct 15th - Nov 15th

Week 1 Goal

Select a system, research what it can do: Figure out what RPG system I will use in creating my campaign. I will be looking for a flexible system (simple, low barrier, for the group that I want to run through the story) which i can use to create my campaign. Investigate GURPS, Savage Worlds, BRP, and Core systems to see what will work best for my story/group. Choose a system and commit.

Week 2 Goal

Outline major encounters and plot points: I will write out the structure of the main arc of the story and challenges the players will face. I will plan out the (general) number of sessions and what each one will consist of. (Aiming for 5 quick sessions or 1 long session).

Week 3 Goal

Identify and flesh out the setting and characters: Approach the story as an actor, what NPCs will players encounter, what do they sound like, what do they want? Write out setting descriptions. Decide on lore and background of world for color.

Week 4 Goal

Finish and Begin: Finish writing out any remaining puzzles, settings, characters, or events. Organize materials in a logical way. Invite players to play. Schedule our first session.
