Build my way out of my desk mess
Wrenever Craft and Cosplay DK30 Fall 2020 3 1
Description
I’ve got piles of small projects, tasks, and paperwork that have slowly accumulated in my office for quite some time now. I plan to take small achievable steps to overcome this overwhelming mess consuming my desk. As I organize and work my way through all these items, I will tackle one of the larger, more creative projects i’ve put aside due to this mess.
Recent Updates
Day 10: Cleanup of the desk took a bit of a backseat to cleanup of the rest of the house today, as we’re getting things ready for a halloween party next week. I finished cutting out my 3D papercraft shapes and have started gluing them up. It’s really nice to already have enough room to work on this small project.
Day 9:
- Not sure if it’s cleanup or paperwork. Well it’s definitely paperwork of some sort. I bought a 3D papercraft model of a crystal for experimentation, as a proof of concept for a larger acrylic version. Cut out 2/3 of the pages to put together. Still need to buy some white glue to put it together.
Day 8: Returned from overnight work trip (Day 6/7).
- No cleanup tasks.
- Project task:
- Disassembled and repaired electric heater.
Day 5: Slow day. Hurt my hip at work
- Started going through my stack of paperwork on desk. No visual change of mess but it feels good that I at least started on it.
Day 4:
- Backup CDs, DVDs, and external hard drives to NAS. - Frustrating day for today’s task. My external drive fell over while being read and died. The audio CDs have DRM on them that handbrake doesn’t recognize. Still trying to figure out software for backing them up, and so I can just play them on my phone instead of being stuck on CD. - Took apart failed drive, added platters to my stack for future windchime project, magnets for general use.
- Put away some things around desk.
Day 3: Cleanup Tasks:
- Cleaning silicone of dirty coleman LED lanterns (x4). Disassembled lanterns, removed silicone covers, washed and bleached them.
- Washed/cleaned dirty mousepad.
Project Task: Move and reorganize household LAN devices. I currently have my wired lan bridged from the basement to a router in the center of the house, the living room. My NAS and UPS just run too loudly for this quiet space. The project is to move these devices to my office closet, which will also let me get wired LAN to my computer.
- Terminated ethernet cabling.
- Cut hole in vent for power and ethernet cables.
- Routed behind shelf to closet, connected UPS, NAS, and switch.
- Ran ethernet cable from switch to computer.
Day 2: Cleanup Tasks:
- Found charger to old laptop. Put both away, together this time.
- Filed away some paperwork on desk.
- Replaced keyboard with squeaky backspace key with spare from work. Cleaned old keyboard up and donated it to salvation army along with some outdoor electric timers and a weird ball toy.
- Put snacks away into the Snack Cabinet ™
Project Tasks:
- Trained propagated umbrella tree shoots together and tied it up to a support.
Day 1 task: Painted and screwed on a board above the door trim for my cats to travel to the top of my shelves
Task 2: Programmed Timer for my plant growing lights and installed it.
Estimated Timeframe
Oct 15th - Nov 15th
Week 1 Goal
Choose at least one task each day to complete. Use resources to make the tasks easier such as listening to audiobooks or reducing distractions like turning off my computer.
Week 2 Goal
Continue with everyday tasks. Break down large or difficult tasks into smaller portions. If struggling, just start one single task on the desk for the day to maintain momentum. Start conception of final project, plan for any building materials that may need to be ordered first.
Week 3 Goal
Start building final project. If stuck, write down reasons I feel unable to complete or progress on project. Break obstacles down into achievable goals. Re-evaluate scope of final project.
Week 4 Goal
Work on final project and attempt completion.
