3D Art TV Diorama

Javilq Visual Art DK30 Fall 2020 1 3

Description

Create a 3d portfolio piece based on concept. Transitioning from my current 3d Artist position to a new company will require different art style and techniques that I am not as familiar with; this project will help me learn and add a new piece to my existing portfolio.

End of week 4 update: As previously mentioned, things went slower than I expected at the beginning. Considering that is part of this experienced, I know have a better gage into how much work I can take on weekly. With that said, my week 4 goal had changed into outputting a render with all of the final high poly meshes created and positioned. Along with this, a lighting pass had to be done to start thinking about how I wanted the final feel of the diorama/artwork to be. I can happily say that I accomplished this goal.

With dk30 ending, I am now set up to move forward with this project on my own and take it to the finish line. This has been the first dk30 I have participated it and I found it immensely helpful. It has helped me get into the habit of working most days after my dayjob even thou I still need to work on it some more. I look forward to both finishing this project as well as participating in the next dk30!

Day 28ish: As it is obvious, I won’t be finishing up this project in the 30 days thanks to technical issues, time management and work commitments. This does NOT mean that I will stop working on this however. I will do a bigger “review” of my 30 days on the final day but my main goal starting this project here with you was to get into the habit of working on personal projects every day (or nearly) as a way to form the habit. Since realizing that for the 30 days I wouldn’t be able to complete the portolio piece, I have changed what the final goal for the 30 days will be. I wanted to have “something” to show you all at the end of this time, so I am making sure I have done all of my high poly models done and a lighting pass done. Keeping the materials white, it will allow me to get an idea of the feeling I want for the final piece. I think this will be a nice milestone to the 30 days before continuing on to create the low poly meshes, textures, lighting and final rendering on my own.

With that said, here is first pass of the lighting. If you look closely, you can see some of the high poly meshes still missing, mostly outlets and what not. I will be getting to those in the next couple of days.

Thanks for reading my wall of text, and thanks to everyone else working on projects!

Day 17(?): I HAVE been working on this. Progress has gone slow as some things popped up but I have kept up working on it. Here is the new update, got the high poly of the atari more or less finished!

Day 10: Took the weekend easy as I had some personal stuff going on. I worked on the plastic crates. I added the parts that have been done for now into the blockout and took a screenshot to see how it was working so far.

I’m still not sold on the crates. definitely not sold on three stacked this way and will at least create a taller “milk” crate to cut down on the repetition. Worst case scenario I will make a simple stool to place the television on. Next up will be working on the Atari console!

Day 7: Small update. Worked on and finished (at least I think so) the rabbit ears high poly model. Next is the rest of the supporting models, starting with the plastic crates that the tv will sit on and then moving on to the atari.

Looking at my goals, I’m definitely behind. I’ll try to catch up and make up the time elsewhere to hopefully finish by the end of week 4. However, my priority will be to finish the main pieces (tv/atari) to at least be able to get a diorama render of those pieces before finishing out the scene with the environment.

Day 5 and 6: This is where I am stopping tonight. High poly of the TV is more or less done unless I notice something or end up wanting to add or change something. Took much longer than I expected since I had to figure out certain things as I went, along with some struggles with the Blender since I am used to working with 3ds Max.

Next step is to move on to the other meshes in the shot. Stay tuned!

Day 3 and 4: Sometimes things just don’t work out the first time. I was hoping to have this finished by today, however had a few issues and tweaks and ended up having to remake part of the back. As you can see, I tweaked the back components a bit. I had to remodel part of it since it had become slanted at some point. I also added some hooks for the power cable. In the main diorama, the back and cable hooks won’t be visible. However, I wanted to add these details in case I wanted different shots or wanted to use this TV in another project, it can be ready to go as a stand alone prop. Unfortunately, there are still a few things that are needed to be finished. Mainly just small details like screws that will really help to bring it all together.

Day 2: This was my day 2 from yesterday. Working on the high res version of the television. Need to do a little bit more work and detail on the back of it. Goal is to have it ready today and start on another object like the antenna and boxes.

Day 1: Blockout and camera set up. I tried to keep it simple and focus on location and general size of the piece. My main focus/hero will be the TV so I tried to make everything else a support of it.

Here is the concept art I will be working from. Created by Michael Kelly.

Estimated Timeframe

Oct 16th - Nov 15th

Week 1 Goal

Gather reference for the objects as well as texture, lighting, mood and detail images. Finish simple blockout of the scene to figure out dimension/size of objects and camera angle. Finish the high poly modeling of objects in the scene.

Week 2 Goal

Create low poly objects based on the high poly meshes. Unwrap, bake out texture maps and fix any issues.

Week 3 Goal

Using the baked out texture maps, work on texturing the objects in the scene using Substance Painter. Take time while texturing to ensure high quality.

Week 4: Finish texturing if Week 3 was not long enough. Work on lighting and presentation inside of Marmoset. If extra time, try importing the the diorama into Unreal Engine to begin to get familiar.

Week 4 Goal

With how the previous weeks went, my goal for week 4 changed. My goal for the final week is to finish modeling all of the high poly meshes and do a lighting pass. This will set me up perfectly to continue the project after the dk30 is over and keep the project going.
