Description

Welp, there was no escaping it, I bought Houdini today. (See I warned you about the dad jokes!). So now it’s time to learn it, the plan is to make a flame effect, maybe do some procedural generations of maps and attempt a liquid and an electric effect as well. But all those will be after I spend a bit learning what the buttons do :D

This is the result of my DK30, a rather large badly laid out town. The town is based off one texture, there are 2 of 11 houses that are autogenerated in houdini, they are very plain compared to the pre-built ones but I was only going for a prototype and confirmation that it’s possible. No code was used I think, maybe the texture reader from before, not sure. Anyway it turned out reasonably for a prototype, plenty of bugs for sure but I just wanted to get an idea if it was possible to get it up and running at a reasonable frame rate, turns out it’ll run at 120fps with the distance set to 64k units, this is in the editor without optimization too, so yeah happy with that \o/

Project is now completed and time for my new DK30 to start :D

Finally getting back into houdini after my cyberpunking. So pretty much week 4 : shack attack is going to be all I do for now in houdini. The blood and fire effects and stuff I will come back to once I’ve done some other DK30s. The main focus will be on houses for now.

So this is progression from walls to basic auto-generated house. (So basic doesn’t have a door) The houses have a few options, different windows and such, corner types, just enough that I decided on a graphics style, cartoon rather than realistic which means probably within a week or so I’ll post an update with a completely different look.

Spoilers ahead! Things I have done in cyberpunk most haven’t.

  1. Adopted the cat
  2. Visited the malestrom vendor
  3. Played through 6 times, and got so annoyed by Jackies AI and stealthy door blocking, gun charge blocking (Try crafting a nekomata to see how annoying it is) you are glad you are now solo…

and with 500+ hours in cyberpunk… time to leave my nerd hibernation month and get back to Houdini \o/

So as I was messing around with bandlab I managed to break it somehow.

So I used OBS to record the song I composed so I can recreate it later.

The added bonus : Now you can suffer it early ^^ OR N-Joi my 80s/90s 8-bit feel beetz or something.

The end is that way so I can have a little credits thing… it was done in bandlab which is pretty neat :)

So far houdini has been great, it seems really powerful for an indie dev, works in Unity/UE4/Maya and 3DSmax so handy regardless of what you use.

My current plan is to leverage the power (Sounds fancier than saying I’ll be drawing boxes in different colors in GIMP and use that make a small town, I expect this will take a little bit, so I’ll forgo week 2 flames and work on the week 4 goal first. Who knows maybe I’ll even get crazy and draw a circle D:

Estimated Timeframe

Nov 19th - Dec 31st

Week 1 Goal

Install it. Go through the tutorials to get to grip with the basics, follow them along as I like to learn by doing.

Week 2 Goal

It’ll all end in Flames! Make a flame thing that can be attached to an actor in UE4. So I’ll probably spend most of the time looking up how to do stuff within goggle.

Week 3 Goal

Blood for the blood god! Make a blood liquid thing and see how good I can get it looking.

Week 4 Goal

When shacks attack! Experiment with procedural “Buildings” won’t actually be a building but I’ve seen really briefly that you can setup and use osm files to generate stuff on houdini and import it to UE4 and make stuff happen. So I want to do that but adapted for my game, which may mean I have to visit the GIMP and draw something (Ah yes, me and drawing, a Doom foretold!)
