Bringing Maethavee's Inn to 3D

alexisfaintreny Visual Art DK30 Spring 2021 15 15

Description

I am a Game Artist for a living, and my 3 year contract as a lead environment artist is coming to an end so I want to make some spiffy new portfolio pieces just in case I have to do some searching for a new job. I don’t know if I’ll be able to complete the project in 30 days, since I have to do this on top of finishing a game project, but this could be a fun way to at least do a little bit of progress each day. I hope it’s okay if I’ve already started 2 weeks ago, but the project is still pretty early on.

My portfolio is horrifically out of date since I’ve been working for 3 years on multiple projects sealed under non-disclosure acts, so this would be a great way to show the world just how far I’ve come! My portfolio

After a couple weeks of minimal progress, I’m back with a BIG update, not really in progress for the project, but in terms of personal growth I’m really happy with how much I’ve learned in terms of making stylized textures in substance designer.

The node graph for these textures is probably one of the largest ones I’ve made so far, but thankfully there are so many parts of it that I’m going to be able to reuse across assets to make smart materials and keep a cohesive art style throughout the scene!

One of the ways I plan to make my textures is by following Jimmy Malachier’s tutorials, and branching off that to make the textures fit my scene. Pretty excited to expand my substance designer skills more, since I primarily use Substance Painter.

More progress. Been feeling quite sick this week unfortunately but still managed to get quite a bit done. I’ve settled on Unreal Engine for a few different reasons, mainly that I work in Unity all day so it’s kind of nice just using a different engine for a personal project.

I’m not super settled on the art style yet, I want to do something stylized, watercolor-esque, something out of my comfort zone, and if that doesn’t work out I’ll go back to a realistic style that I’m familiar with.

4 Getting somewhere! Starting to look like something! I think I’ve settled on using Unreal Engine for the rendering process. There’s a lot I want to learn that’s going to really help with tying everything together since I want to do a stylized look which will match the concept a bit more. Which means I’ll be spending time learning stylized texture workflows (I have some experience but I’ve only ever worked professionally on realistic art styles) as well as some custom shader stuff down the line.

Some more progress! Tweaking some of the proportions, the right side of the building has a lot of layering going on so I imagine it’s going to need quite a few iterations before it starts to feel right, since at the moment I’m still not quite satisfied with it. While doing iterations on that I like to spruce things up here and there like the doorways.

Some progress! Still figuring things out but starting to get the shape fleshed out.

Here’s the concept I’m trying to recreate: Artist’s page Ref

I’ve already started working out some of the proportions and early passes at the Inn.

1 This is just the scene in Maya so there’s no real lighting or nice camera effects yet, but soon hopefully!

Estimated Timeframe

Feb 17th - Mar 31st

Week 1 Goal

Have a basic blockout modeled out, proportions somewhat figured out, some basic lighting passes done and the camera angle / settings started.

Week 2 Goal

Refinement of the inn, maybe some materials started as a placeholder, some background details done, more lighting passes, some detailing passes started on the inn. Figuring out what art style I want to go for since I’m still undecided on that.

Week 3 Goal

Have a lot of the detailings started, maybe some foliage elements, some nice particles, some nice refined lighting. It starts to feel like the project is coming together and now it’s about tidying up all the various components. Maybe some final proportion tweaks if need be.

Week 4 Goal

Hopefully the finishing touches! Some render passes, detailings on background pieces, compositing passes.
