This project is now complete.

Update #1

I set up MetaTrader 5, signed up for a demo account and created my first basic trading bot.

Unsurprisingly the trading bot wasn’t a resounding success, yet it served as a refresher for my C++ skills (or lack thereof) and I learned some basic trading terminology.

The second bot actually has some strategy behind it and seems profitable on first glance, despite having some bugs in it. It’s still in the super rough state however and I plan on learning about non-strategy aspects of the bot like error handling and market awareness.
