Description

I’ve been working on this project on-and-off for about 3.5 years: Taddies Tales, a 2d pixel art platformer. Developing it primarily with one other developer, my primary focus has been on the artwork. My aim of this DK30 is to work at least a bit of artwork for the project each day, and to keep on top of social media posts.

Day 21

Things went a bit awry, had a bit of illness as well as a weekend anniversary. I did a couple of personal pieces which I won’t show, but also made a bit of progress on the enemies!

Day 16

Experimenting with enemy types today, trying out different things then going to mix and match and see what works. Also I walked.

Day 14

No walking and only a bit of pixel art today, adding door options to the wall tiles.

The Week 2 twitter analytics are below. Posting the new World 3 background and the newest world art with the blue sky and tower proved to be a huge hit, making a significant boost across the board. It comes as no surprise that if you post art that people like, you’ll get more attention. Forming connections on servers with other developers can help too.

Day 12

More walking, more pixel art. Making a wall that reflects the style of the tower, not much worth showing at this stage. Keep on keeping on!

Day 11

Stormy rainy weather today so I ended up not walking…

More environment art though! Got the tower done, now to build other walls and floating islands whilst thinking about how everything will shape up.

Day[9]

It’s the most important day of the event, but I don’t have anything to show!

Not from lack of trying though. I’d originally started World 5 with the intention of having a bright blue sky and having it daytime to stand out from some previous worlds, which would have floating debris, islands, and buildings. However I looked back at the original theme for world 5 we discussed and that theme and this sky aren’t going to fit together… I tried, but I won’t show the result.

Also more walking. Blisters. Yay.

Day 8

More walking today.

Also started working on the first piece of World 5 today: the sky! The clouds and background should move at slightly different rates, and there’s plenty of space for verticallity too (but it won’t fit here):

Day 7

I can walk again!

More world polishing and finalising the background I was working on yesterday:

Day 6

Still needing to rest the feet today, maybe walk tomorrow.

Lots of polishing in world 3 today:

  • resizing and reimporting assets
  • smaller alternate versions of assets to populate background
  • fixing tile positions
  • replacing tiles with new assets
  • working on a new background portion for some of the levels, not done yet though!

Spent too much time on the drawing tablet today that my wrist hurts now too! The joys of getting older.

Day 5

Started walking today but had to turn around, both feet with bruises on! Need to rest them for a bit.

Anyway, started fixing the background of world 3 and thinking about more assets I could add:

Day 4

Not sure where the time went… worked on a new banner and some social media posts and went through some levels but that’s about it.

Daily walk as usual, managed to step on a sharp stone which has bruised my toe, not sure how long that will last!

Day 3

Small progress today, but got the skelefish death animation done at least.

Achieved the 3rd daily walk, some twitter stuff, and have something in the bag for down the line.

Day 2

At the end of day 1 and beginning of day 2 I worked on cleaning up twitter. We were following a lot of non-mutuals which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but a lot of them were dead or not related, and I want the feed to be filled with similar things! And we want to follow other pixel artists and developers back too.

Twitter also made me choose to do more fish-related things today, because a social media account called @PixelDailies do daily challenges which was doing a #MarineLife hashtag today. Pixel daily tweets can fetch more engagements, so to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, I can work on social media and game art at the same time.

Day 1

Working on a skeleton fish boss for World 3:

World 3 is a spooky mansion/castle kind of place, with ghosts, butlers, and maids all trying to kill you. We have a lot of work done for it already, but it needs some finishing touches and extra assets.

Also as a side target, I’m getting up early for a walk every morning. Trying to stretch those legs a bit.

Mar 1st - Mar 28th

Week 1 Goal

A couple of enemies need creating: such as a skeleton fish and a cart cannon gnome. Then I need to get started in boosting the Twitter account and preparing media for it.

Week 2 Goal

Let’s focus on more assets to populate the worlds with this week!

By the end of week 4, I will have made some progress on the project every day, and the social media presence will hopefully have grown!
