Learning Japanese

Echo Education and Career DK30 Spring 2021 5 4

Description

For the past five years I have lied to myself that I would learn Japanese, I would start for a couple of weeks before dropping it for whatever reason. I hope that the next couple of weeks will help develop a habit that I can continue after this DK30 ends. My goal is to try and learn at least Hiragana by the end of the month.

Day 30 + Final thoughts:

I revised a lot of the characters I learned today as I already finished learning all of the Hiragana characters.

The first three weeks of the project was the hardest, as per usual I tried to find every excuse not to do it when learning and revising would only take 5 - 10 minutes. Around the middle of the DK30 was when I disappointed myself the most by completely forgetting to learn Hiragana. Which is why I was glad that I found a routine that works for me the best, trying to learn in the morning and revise during the evening. Even if that were to fail I have been able to easily drop what ever I am doing and just learn and revise Hiragana.

So whilst I could not achieve an all green on the excel, I am hopeful that the new habits that I developed at the end of the DK30 can translate to when I begin to learn Katakana soon. Overall, I once again believe that doing the DK30 was incredibly beneficial and will certainly consider doing it again.

Day 29: I finished learning all of Hiragana and will focus on just revising. I am however, a little disappointed that I did not try to practice writing the characters and simply relied on the website I used to learn Hiragana.

Day 28: I learned 5 more characters and ~50 characters.

Day 27: I learned 5 new characters and revised 40 characters.

Day 26: I only learned 5 new characters today and no revision but I hope that I will have more time tomorrow.

Day 25: I learned 8 new double hiragana characters, and so I will move onto double consonants next. I also revised 19 characters.

Day 24: I learned 10 more characters and revised another 20.

Day 23: I learned 5 new double hiragana and lost count of how many characters I revised! Some that I already revised three times popped up already. Also the colours look disjointed because of day 18 where I chose to revise a lot of characters but chose not to update the excel spreadsheet so I could revise them more int he future.

Day 22: I learned 5 new characters in double hiragana and revised 10 characters. I plan to try and ramp things up from tomorrow onwards to hopefully reach the week 4 goal of learning all the characters of hiragana (for the first time)

Day 21: last update was actually done just after midnight (of what would have been day 20), I only did a revision today but starting from tomorrow I plan to spend the morning revising what I learned and the evening learning new characters. Hopefully this new regime will last!

Day 21: No update yesterday just as a break and did some light revision today.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 19: I learned 5 new characters and next up would be to learn double Hiragana.

Day 18: Not updating the past three days because of real life tasks has been a common trend whenever I tried to learn Japanese in the past. One task in the website I use to study can be done in under 5 minutes, because of that I am quite embarrassed that I could not even spend that short time to try and learn some Japanese.

Therefore, I will do my very best for the remainder of the DK30 to learn Japanese. Today I decided to simply revise as much as I could but I chose not to update the Excel Spreadsheet as I believe it would only be fair after missing three days.

Day 14: I could not do any yesterday as I was busy, today I learned 6 new characters and revised 30 characters. However, I made a lot of mistakes.

Day 12: I learned 5 new characters and posted on time.

Day 9: I only managed to learn 5 new characters today.

Day 8: This time I actually forgot to update D: I managed to revise 30 characters, though no new ones learned.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 7: I almost forgot to make an update today, I learned 10 new characters and I plan to dedicate tomorrow mainly for revision but I will try to also learn new characters too.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 6: I could not do as much as I wanted to do today, so I will try and make it up tomorrow.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 5: Even though I only learned another 5 characters I was happy that after the scheduled revision I got all 20 correct.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 4: I learned another 5 characters.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 3: I managed to revise the first 10 characters, though I mistook A or O, and I also learned 5 new hiragana which was more straightforward to learn.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 2: I learned another 5 characters and I just realised that since I am using a website/app to learn, I would not be practicing writing it. So that is something that I would have to tackle.

Echo 4 years ago

Day 1: I learned 5 new characters of Hiragana, this is my minimum target, but I do hope to increase that pace and learn as much as I can in a single day.
