Game Feature Appreciation: Photo Mode

DMaYi Gaming and Streaming DK30 Spring 2021 2 1

Description

As one of my hobbies is designing games, I go through a lot of different games. Because I love designing mechanics and features for games, I often ignore a lot of the visuals and visual features that games bring with them like: Photo Mode. This DK30 I would like to focus on integrating taking some photos using Photo Mode (or Print Screen) in the games I play while matching a weekly theme I set for myself for fun!

LATE END Week 4.

Scheduled surgery during week 4 affected the 30 day completion of my project but I wanted to complete this project. During recovery I was able to play a few games; then Monster Hunter: Rise came out. Taking what this project instilled into me, I took more moments to pause and consider taking some photos during gameplay.

The funny theme is a lax theme to end on by attempting to capture silly situations or conflicting emotions from various characters in one shot. Here are a few I have for this week:

Genshin Impact Forcing the forge assistant to work faster. small child character throwing a bomb over a character kneeling in front of a forge

Monster Hunter: Rise Feels like a tourist photo. character posing with armored dog in front of a japanese style building. characters in the background include man with dog and lady sitting and enjoying dango snack

It’s a cute creature possibly staring into your soul. large creature with jelly like shell back and two glowing spots that look like eyes

Concluding Thoughts This was intended to be a very lightweight project designed to instill a habit into me of slowing down when playing games and appreciating more things visual as well as a fun feature designed into most games that I felt bad ignoring. Having this project looming on the back of my mind gave me that “homework assignment due” feeling which helped keep me on track with my goal.

This project felt successful as I take more pauses now to consider photos during gameplay instead of going 150% into playing and mechanics where everything devolves into numbers for me.

END Week 3.

Not many games played and therefore photos taken this week but met the quota for the week.

The Emotion theme had me fiddling with filters and settings to enhance some of the facial expressions captured in the photos/screenshots. Most of the photos taken started out as funny but through the filters it attaches some emotion to the image. This week, as expected, was definitely more of a Photo Mode feature appreciation instead of just Photo Made itself.

Some photos from this week: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Sad? Lost in Thought? non-player character's face in black and white from the game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Focusing? Or wanting a smoke? non-player character's close up face and hand in front from the game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

Genshin Impact Surprise! (no filters) character with green hair and glasses surprised at a vial exploding in front of her face

Weeks are getting busier leaving less time for games and project so I am glad I chose an easier project for me in these times. Next week’s theme of funny should be an exciting conclusion to this project; further thoughts on the project may have me include an alternate theme of “Birds” to this week. We’ll see.

END Week 2.

The Action theme was really fun to play with in Photo Modes. I particularly was enjoying the Photo Mode in one of my favorite action games: Nioh 2. With as many hours I have put into Nioh 2 I never even thought to touch the Photo Mode; now that I have dedicated time to appreciate the feature it is quite fun!

Getting good action shots almost feels like playing a different game as it is a combination of understanding the action/animation from your character as well as timing that photo mode pause at the right moment to capture the movement you want.

Some photos from this week:

Total War: Three Kingdoms warrior on horse charging into a group of jungle soldiers in the game total war three kingdoms

Genshin Impact genshin impact character Hu Tao swinging a fiery spear

Nioh 2 player character swinging scythe at a red horned demon in game Nioh 2

START Week 3.

I quite like this feeling of playing an additional game in the games I already enjoy playing and studying. I am expecting week 3’s theme of Emotion to be a little easier to capture photos as I don’t have to manage my screenshot timing!

END Week 1.

Life getting in the way of allowing time to focus on project so I did not get to take as many photos as I wanted as I was not playing as many games as I had intended to for said photos. I was still able to get an album going to track my photos for this project and have 3 to upload from a few games I was able to get to!

Immortals Fenyx Rising (Switch) landscape photo with mountains and greek buildings in the background from the game immortals fenyx rising

Genshin Impact landscape photo of a small dark cave with a treasure chest sticking out from the dirt from the game genshin impact

Atelier Ryza 2 landscape photo of character standing in front of a lake in the game Atelier Ryza 2

It was nice to actually stop and notice some of the environment details to appreciate the work that goes into some of these asset placements. I think this starting Theme was actually the hardest for me to start with! To actually seek out interesting landscapes are vistas, stop and mess with the “Photo Mode” that is given is something completely abnormal for me when I’m playing games. Feels a little strange to me right now but I like it! I am working towards the goal I set for myself.

Apparently I really like the blue tones in my photos and the blue hues offered by photo modes.

START Week 2.

Looking forward to getting into the Action Theme and seeing how Photo Modes may enhance those actions in the photos I take. Hopefully I’ll have more time and more variety of games to get into for these photos in the coming week!
