Making My First LoFi song
Dragon18Lord Music DK30 Spring 2021 0 0
Description
So as it stands in this very moment the song is already done. I wanted it to be a DK30 project with updates but I completely forgot to post about it so I decided I will just post about my creative process and failures and successes while trying to make a song from a genre that I didn’t have to many experiences with while trying to learn the DAW as well.
Recent Updates
So I realized I did this totally wrong. All of my updates and process is in the goals.

Week 1 Goal
So my first week started with inspiration. I was under a lot of stress that day and decided to put on Lofi Girl on youtube. I zoned out and stared at my computer background for like 3 hours. It was so leveling. I felt relaxed. I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to continue listening to LoFi for the rest of the week. At the end of my journey down the LoFi rabbit hole I decided that I wanted to express myself and my feelings in a song. So I loaded up FL Studios and started my endeavor.
Week 2 Goal
This week was a lot of google and youtube as I have very little experience with FL Studios (my DAW). I needed to learn how to make it work and how to get what I heard in my head into the DAW. Thankfully I have a midi keyboard so I could DI (direct input) what I wanted right into the program. I also did some searching for some nice sample packs that I thought I might like. Found a few nice ones and now the sounds I wanted to hear started to come together.
Week 3 Goal
Now that I had an understanding of the DAW and some nice sounds and samples it was finally time to flesh out my idea. I did some research on basic chords and progressions that are popular in the LoFi genre. Found one that I liked and tweaked it a bit and I was off to the races. The melody and the drums very quickly came together. I put together a really nice accompaniment for the melody and added the same thing an octave up to give it depth. After a few days of fleshing that out it was time for a bassline. This part proved to be the most difficult part for me in the whole song. None of the sounds and samples I had seemed to sound good. no matter what octave I used, it sounded out of key. At this point I reached out to one of my close friends who also happens to be a local producer for help. He taught me how to make my own sounds using some of the plugins i had access to. I did some tinkering and finally, it was right. After him helping me he really liked how the music was sounding, he asked if he could add some guitar to the song and af course I agreed. I mastered the track and made sure all the audio levels were right, added a volume gate to the beginning and end of the song and added some nice reverb to the melody and accompaniment. The track was done. All that was left was to wait for my friend to record his guitar part to add.
Week 4 Goal
He sent me his guitar part and I added it into the song, and mixed it so it fit. Now it was time for a name. after hours of trying to find a name for not only my artist persona but also the song itself, I came up with Hirül as my name. I am a huge Legend of Zelda fan and I decided I would embody that in my name. As far as the name for the song, the best advice I got was to name it whatever I was feeling at the time of deciding to make it. A little corny and basic its name became Chillax. After many hours and days of learning and creative block my song was complete.
