Re-learning playing cello
Trinkey Music DK30 Spring 2021 0 0
Description
To improve my mental health I want to re-learn one of my great hobbies from the past: playing the cello! I have not been playing regularly for over 12 years which means my skills are very rusty. My primary goal is to have fun and try to find the passion in playing music yet again but NOT to overdo it!
Recent Updates
I achieved my goal for week 3 without any problems!
Though the start of the final week have not been good. I was not able to play at all this Monday due to work and me being a bit sick. I played during my lunch today (just finished!) which felt great.
I have decided to mark this project as completed a bit beforehand but I largely feel this experiment was a success! I have more energy and feel more motivated at work. I also feel that my problem solving skills are back at more my usual level.
As a result I have decided to continue playing cello during my lunch break once a week.
Week 2 have ended and I have been playing 3 days a week! Success! I decided to add it into my outlook calender to make sure I don’t miss it!
In short term it have been affective. In the afternoons after I played I have been more positive and energetic.
I have learned that 30 mins is a bit much at the moment since my hands really can’t keep up and start cramping after only one song. I need to add in quite a lot of mini-breaks and even then I probably is more close to 20 mins. Though I have already seen improvements in strength and dexterity in my hands!
Increasing my skill is not my primary motive but I’m positively surprised at how much I still remember! A lot of muscle memory still remains! I have been playing a lot of Swedish folk songs such as Äppelbo gånglåt, Visa vid vindens ängar and Vår friska vindar. A lot of fun!
I started the project completely off: after the DK30 is over and on a Wednesday afternoon. But I was motivated and did not want to wait for next DK30 or even on a new week so here we go!
Today I dusted of the cello and got it tuned! Not a completely easy task since it have been hanging on my wall for the past years, but with the help of a tuning app I got the cello sounding almost right. Played some scales and since my 2 year old daughter was very interested I also played a song she enjoys: twinkle twinkle little star. A worthy start to this project!
My goal for the coming weeks is to use the working from home situation to my benefit and take 30 mins of my lunch break, 3 days a week, and devote to some fun cello playing! To start with I will play whatever song I to feel like, but I will probably view Scherzo by C. Webster as a goal since I remember how fun it was to play.
