Work on Novel First Draft
Perks of Being a Cauliflower Writing DK30 Fall 2021 7 6
Description
Been writing a fantasy novel that follows two different character perspectives. Been a project of mine for about 3 years and I have 10 or so chapters left to write for the first draft. my chapters are typically 4-5 thousand words long but i think the maximum i could write in a week without burning myself out is 2500 so this is going to be my goal for each week. I’m pretty self-conscious about sharing details about the book at this stage but I’m hoping the DK30 will help me keep a more consistent writing schedule rather than writing ten thousand words one week then taking a huge break.
Recent Updates
Got the fourth weeks work done early. Feeling pretty good about the work I have done for this DK30 despite the delays. I’m going to keep working on this and hopefully I will be ready to review the first draft before the next DK30 comes around. After I have the second draft I wouldn’t mind sharing some of the story. Either way I’m glad I decided to become a part of the DK30 and took a more active role in the community.
Hope to see everyone for the next DK30
I went into writing this week with the plan to change character perspectives but it made more sense to keep with the same character for the sequence of events to make sense. Still I’m pretty happy with how the story is shaping up. I think I’m getting better at writing more unique characters. I will probably have to go back and alter some of the older characters so they are not so generic but I feel like I have accomplished everything I set out to do in these past chapters. Still got one week of writing left to go even though I think the DK30 has technically finished already. Either way I still plan to finish what I said I would.
So I have well and truly missed my deadline for my week 3 goal. I started the week behind and then got stressed about trying to catch up to meet the next deadline. I kept telling myself that I would just power out 2500 words in a night and it would all be good but that killed my motivation to start writing even a little. I think I’m going to start my week 3 goals from this Friday. Its not what I had wanted but this project for me is supposed to be fun and a way to help overcome my anxiety with sharing my writing, so in that regard I went about things the wrong way. I think if I were to do this again, rather than assign word limits on certain days I would instead assign specific times that I would commit to writing even if it was only an hour or two. Either way I’m still planning to finish this DK30 even if I’m late to do so. I’m also going to try to make an effort to give more regular updates even just small things.
Thanks
Late again on the update. I was sick for part of the week which meant things took a bit longer. Got my Week 2 goals done. Hope everyone else is going well with their DK30.
I know I’m late on the update but I completed my first week of writing. I know its not a very exciting project to follow since I’m only giving word count updates but its nice to see people show an interest. Other than the word count my other goals went pretty well. started bringing back previous characters and making the main character more active in the story. Having a planned/structure schedule has made writing easier. My biggest issue is getting started so by having days that I plan to write it makes it easier to commit to. Once I have started i generally write more than I intend too.
So I had a bit of writing to do before I was at the point I wanted to be to start this DK30 so I have been doing a little. Thought I might give screenshots of the word count each week to show how its going. So for this DK30 I’m starting at 153,197 words and hope to be somewhere around 160,000 words by the end of the DK30. Apparently most novels are supposed to only be around 100,000 words long so I’m not sure if i should try to split the book into two parts, trim the book down, or just accept that its a long book. Also apparently Microsoft Word doesn’t like the word count because its started to glitch out when I type new words. Might be a good idea to split the file even if I intend to keep it as a single book just in case it does more than just graphical glitches.
xoxo
Estimated Timeframe
Oct 22nd - Nov 19th
Week 1 Goal
Monday: Break. Tuesday: 500 words. Wednesday Break. Thursday: 500 words. Friday: Break. Saturday: 1000 words. Sunday: 500 words.
Other Goals: Make one of the main characters more active in the story. Bring back some of the older characters mentioned earlier in the novel so they are not wasted.
Week 2 Goal
Monday: Break. Tuesday: 500 words. Wednesday Break. Thursday: 500 words. Friday: Break. Saturday: 1000 words. Sunday: 500 words.
Other Goals: This week will be a continuation on the previous weeks work so i will still be working on making one of the main characters more active in the story. Bring back some of the older characters mentioned earlier. Adjust the word target goals for the next weeks.
Week 3 Goal
Monday: Break. Tuesday: 500 words. Wednesday Break. Thursday: 500 words. Friday: Break. Saturday: 1000 words. Sunday: 500 words.
Other Goals: Moving on to second character perspective. Trying to keep this characters chapter more succinct. I tend to waffle on (as demonstrated by the description of this DK30) and want to avoid superfluous information.
Week 4 Goal
Monday: Break. Tuesday: 500 words. Wednesday Break. Thursday: 500 words. Friday: Break. Saturday: 1000 words. Sunday: 500 words.
Other Goals: Rounding out the second characters chapter. Make second character more sympathetic to the reader. probably needs either physical, psycological, emotional, or idealogical trauma/event or perhaps all four if im feeling particularly malicious. i might have let the character have his way for too long and need to take him down a peg.
