Holiday Snowflake Ornament Crocheting
Aktaia Craft and Cosplay DK30 Fall 2021 12 11
Description
I will be crocheting snowflake ornaments for my friends and family for the upcoming Decemeber Holiday Season. My goal is to make multiple ornaments for each person, and have them completed and wrapped by then end of the project time. This will be my first time blocking a project.
Recent Updates
END OF DK30 2021
I was not able to complete this project within the 30 days, for a few reasons:
-
I dedicated more of my free time to playing the new Animal Crossing update, and had a lot of fun doing it. The new expansion is SO FUN!
-
I realized that I wasn’t as motivated to do the second pattern because it wasn’t as fun to make. I found that I couldn’t zone out and enjoy it, which happened a lot with the first pattern. If I am making something, I want to enjoy the process as much as the finished product. Being able to relax and just be mindful and in the moment of making is something that I really enjoy about the yarn crafting hobby.
Knowing this, my plan is to switch back to the first pattern and make the remaining ornaments I need for everyone to get 6. I know that my motivation was very high when I was working with this pattern, and I feel that I will be more successful with my overall goal by making this change.
Additionally, I have spent a lot of time with the new ACNH expansion, and I feel like I am in a place where I can use my spare time for other activities again. You know how exciting that new game feeling is, so it’s sometimes hard to focus on other things when all you want to do is design vacation homes for ducks (shout out to my gal Gloria!).
Overall, I am happy with the progress that I was able to make, and even though I didn’t finish when I intended to, I am much farther along towards the goal of handcrafted gifts for my family and friends for this holiday season. I am looking forward to working on this again, which I know is a sign that I am ready to start making again.
End of Week 2
I was doing a lot of things this past week that didn’t have to do with my project. I did not have a chance to block any of my completed snowflakes. I started playing Animal Crossing New Horizons again, and reterriforming my island. I also had some family visit, and had a birthday party for my dog.
I was able to complete 3/27 of the 2-row snowflakes. I need to refocus this upcoming week and get more done. I also need to get the blocking set up and started for the completed ones.
More Flakes Falling
I ended up starting to work on the next batch of snowflakes last night. I got one completed, after having to restart it about 12 times. The 2-row pattern uses a stitch called a picot. It’s something that I had not done before, so it was great to try something new. I couldn’t figure out from the pictures on the pattern where to put my needle to make it lie flat, so I turned once again to goo old YouTube for a demo.
Here is a great video demonstrating the stitch
First attempt at the Picot stitches. I was not “finishing the flower” in the right place, so I got a weird hole on the top point.
This was after having to redo it a few more times, and watching the video. I figured out where to put the stitches to make it attach correctly and lie flat.
This was once I got the hang of the stitches, and did a few more points.
Finally finished the first snowflake of pattern 2. Only 26 more to go!
*A side-by-side of the two patterns. They are not blocked or finished yet. *
End of Week 1
I ended up doing quite a lot this week. I was able to focus on the crocheting part more than the finishing and blocking pieces part.
I completed all 27 snowflakes that I needed to make for pattern one (3 row snowflakes), and I am going to start working on the piece for the second pattern (2 row snowflakes). I am going to try blocking some of them during this upcoming week.
First dusting of snow
I began my project today, after deciding how many I need. I will be making 56 snowflakes total, 27 of each pattern. This means I am aiming to complete about 13-14 each week, including blocking.
Preparation Phase
Week 1 Goals Completed So Far:
- I bought some boxes, but will get more if needed.
- I found a yarn that I liked, although it is a weight 3 as opposed to 2, so I will see how it works up. I may have to adjust depending on the size of the finished product.
I have to still make my list of people that I am making these for, and then decide how many each person will be getting. I bought as many boxes as I could from the Dollar Store, and will get more if I need to later. They had a limited selection right now, but will likely get more as the weeks go on.
I also got myself an accountabilibuddy for this round of the DK30, and I look forward to cheering one another on. Last time, I hosted “The Maker’s Hangout”, a weekly get together on the discord for makers in the community. I’m not sure if I will be able to do so again this time, but I will see how it goes.
