Day[9] Coin in Blender
CM_Bolv Visual Art DK30 Fall 2021 3 4
Description
I’m not really looking to do a serious project right now, so I’ll do something fun instead. I’m going to make a Day[9] coin in Blender and turn it into a cool render. Maybe loads of coins, with a giant safe in the middle? I’ll figure the details out as I go.
Recent Updates
It’s been a while since my last update. I tried converting the helmet into a mesh without having to model it myself. It didn’t really work out that well. I figured I’d have no choice but to actually start modeling it. I then chose to do the sun image first, as it’s less complicated.
So, as I started modeling the sun image, I came to the conclusion that I don’t enjoy modeling intricate shapes. Like, at all. And this sun is actually still fairly basic when it comes to its shapes. Constructing a mesh on top of an image is just really monotonous, and I’m not having any fun doing it.
Now, I could just keep on keeping on until I make something really cool, but what’s the point? I’d rather spend my time doing something enjoyable than have something really shiny at the end of a “boring” 30 days.
The above may sound a bit negative, but it’s actually just realistic. I still think Blender is incredibly cool, and I will definitely keep enjoying the crazy stuff other people make with it. It’s just not something I want to sink my time into. Well, not right now at least. Maybe I’ll be back for some low poly stuff later on.
Anyway, I’m marking this project as completed. I don’t want to have this in the back of my mind every night I spend watching Youtube and Netflix :P
Good luck to everyone else. I’ll still be watching everyone’s updates. It’s so cool seeing everyone making all sorts of different awesome stuff <3
I made the helmet side of the coin. These bump maps are very little work, but the depth just isn’t there. And yes, I know that’s the point of a bump map, but I think it just doesn’t work for the main subject in the image. It’s especially noticeable when you lay the coins flat. Will have to do some actual work to make it look better.
I made a coin with the sun image on it. It looks pretty good for just combining a few short tutorials (one for making a coin, one for surface imperfections).
This was my first time using a bump map (and making one from the original sun image), and also my first time using surface imperfections (fingerprints & scratches). I may have overdone it with the fingerprints, but this looks way more realistic than having a perfectly smooth surface.
Made a quick design for the coin (front and backside). Well, I’m not even sure “design” is the right word. It’s just some circles with some Day[9] images in them. At least I know what I’m aiming for, for now. Maybe I’ll add more details later on.
It’s going to look a lot nicer when they’re all 3D and shiny and stuff.
