Working on my silly game
TheTrueHero GameDev DK30 New Year 2022 2 2
Description
Create a silly game in unity. I want to keep it simple and easy. It will be a physics based platformer inspired by ‘Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy’.
Bonus/ Meta goal:
In part this is about finally getting “something” done in unity. Another goal is to develop a productivity habit. I noticed that I am really not doing much with my time expect eat/sleep/work/repeat. I want to get out of this slump an do and learn more cool stuff.
Recent Updates
Uploaded a new build.
- added screenshake
- added more effects
- improved some colors
Put up web GL and windows build of the first ‘alpha’ build on itch.io.
Some shaders don’t seem to work in the web version - so the download version is recommended.
I already noticed some minor bugs - I will probably fix those soon.
Took a day off today and I had planned to do some some more work on the project. But I wasn’t feeling it today and just did some minor stuff.
I decided to release the project as it currently is as the first alpha version. It is not 100% ready yet, but I still want to release something now.
Was busy on Sunday and did not work in the project,
Woke up and just had to start up Unity instantly. Game dev is pretty fun when you kind of know what you are doing. Added some creative commons music today. Fun stuff!
Added some more sound effects today. Music is next.
Was pretty productive today. Currently adding more stuff but I think may I need some playtesting soon.
EDIT: Added some background animations.
Did various stuff today I still needed to get a ‘playable’ prototype done. I am still not done but I feel pretty confident to deliver ‘something’.
Did some more work on my own effects.
Did some more stuff on the shader effect yesterday and some improvements on the levels.
Today even more work on levels and and some graphics. I looked into some free effects from the asset store which I will maybe use.
Finally got that shader to behave like I wanted. Probably total overkill for what I did with it but I like the result. Thats probably enough distraction for this week I need to work on the actual game.
Got distracted by shader stuff.
More level design and some minor improvements to UI feedback.
Took a break from the project at the weekend. I feel like am a little bit behind schedule. Improved collision detection (again) and did some more level design today.
More fixes/modifications for gameplay.
Got distracted by physics bones. Took me quite while to get it right.
Started working on level design. I noticed pretty fast that in the current state the game was was too hard/annoying. I had to modify the player character to make him less likely to roll around.
Added some more sounds.
- added camera script
- refined player controls
- improved visual feedback
Sorry if my updates are not too interesting to read, but I’m currently doing these mostly for myself to keep track of what I did during the DK30.
Anyway, did some more work today.
- made some minor graphics in Inkscape
- finishing touches on player control and UI
- finally found the reason why my particles looked weird (spent quite some time figuring this out)
Got the UI elements working like I wanted.
Worked on some UI elements today. The tutorial I used was alright, but in the end I needed something slightly different. I hope I can get it working like I want to tomorrow!
Got some work done today. Was pretty motivated but ran out of time before getting too much done.
Did a few lines of codes on collision detection. This nothing fancy but I think this will do for now. Had not much time/energy left for the project today. But something is better than nothing!
No coding today, but did some design stuff for the title screen.
Was pretty tired after work and doing sport. Did a little work on collision detection. More tomorrow!
Did some character art in Inkscape and spent/wasted some time learning about shaders. Took me a while to realize that I had to configure the universal render pipeline. -.-
First off I must admit that I started this a while ago and have already worked two or three evenings on this. Most of this time was spent reading tutorial and fiddling with various Unity elements. I also spent way too long debugging some geometry calculations I did because of some basic misunderstanding how everything comes together in Unity.
Lessons learned: Coding and drinking beer does not go well together ;)
