Create Notion Portfolio of Resources for Finding your First job in Tech

Zi_Sakura Education and Career DK30 New Year 2022 0 0

Description

Before I start a new job, I want to create a resource portfolio of how to go about doing reflection, discovery, searching, applying, interviewing for, and negotiating offers of a great first job in tech. As a first-gen low income grad who had no idea how to navigate careers or how to ask for help, this is one of my first projects for scaling my impact on helping first-gen kids and others in landing that great role that will propel their career without hopefully having to go through as many struggles as I did.

Week 1 Day 1:

Recognizing that I am not feeling like writing anything today, I’ve made some progress on my friend Gorick’s book. As I read, I’m wondering if I should document top learnings from the book in some notes for this project, or if I should actually reach out to him to see if he’s down for me helping him to create some content for his website if my project goes well.

I think that’s actually a pretty good idea now that I’m writing it out, so I’m going to send him a message and then finish another chapter of the book with day9’s Elden Ring stream playing on my second screen.

Estimated Timeframe

Mar 9th - Apr 8th

Week 1 Goal

  • I’m going to attempt to work 1 hour each weekday on this. More is great! Will report on how much I do work and set goals for following weeks based on week 1.
  • Brainstorm all steps I want to include and start drafts for minimally 3 exercises and the master checklist, specifically at the beginning of the process with respect to discovery.
  • Draft best practices for 2-3 types of audiences in how they would use my resources.
  • Explore what type of media I will include in addition to text to make the process of going through the steps interactive and fun
  • Consider what should be in version 0 vs. version 1
  • Continue reading my friend Gorick Ng’s book on how to look for jobs.

Week 2 Goal

  • Complete drafts of first 3 exercises processes, ask experienced folks to validate if they look good and give feedback. If time, give these first steps to mentees to follow and ask for feedback.
  • Finish reading my friend Gorick Ng’s book The Unspoken Rules
  • Start drafts for 4 more steps of the process, and keep building out checklist
  • Start drafting social medias and announcements to different groups, etc. that I am a part of on accessing these resources.
  • Use Google Form and start setting up scaled feedback.

Week 3 Goal

  • Finalize feedback q’s on Google Form
  • Fully setup scaled feedback channel for commenting on my content
  • Complete version 0 and publish to the targeted test groups (Slack communities, first gen orgs I am involved in, etc.) with announcements
  • Continue to refine more detailed details and content, consider additional forms of content as well, etc.
  • Review feedback and start revising and implementing updates and new content - start road map for month 2

Week 4 Goal

  • Publish version 1 publicly in all the places with all content.
  • Gauge feedback, see if target audience finds it useful and if others are looking for specific materials i have yet to create.
  • Talk with friends to see what additional things we can do to scale impact in helping people find work.
