Train simulation in Unreal Engine

Rience GameDev DK30 Fall 2022 2 2

Description

I will be taking my first steps with Unreal Engine. My long term goal here is to create visual simulations rather than design entire video games. By the end of the month I am going to watch a model train navigating simple tracks system.

Recent Updates

Rience 3 years ago

Week 1 complete. I powered through it! It was longer than 6 hours, but worth it. Still feels a bit daunting but I think I know how to get started on my trains now.

Rience 3 years ago

I gave it a try today. My level was converted into a streaming world which was not part of the tutorial. I tried to revert it and crashed Unreal losing 1 hour of progress. Good start, will try again tomorrow

Estimated Timeframe

Oct 19th - Nov 18th

Week 1 Goal

6 hours over the weekend. I should be able to finish this tutorial https://dev.epicgames.com/community/learning/tutorials/e2V/your-first-game-in-unreal-engine-5 and familiarize myself with the tools.

Week 2 Goal

1 hour each day, probably between 8-9pm Create a prototype of a train object moving along track objects. No idea if this is a trivial built-in function of UE5 or a full project on its own.

Week 3 Goal

This week is full of overtime, I hope I can find 4 hours during the weekend. Choose a small real-life train hub and recreate it as a scene in UE5. I always liked the rails layout of KWK Staszic power plant but I might have to choose something simpler if time is short. https://www.openrailwaymap.org/?style=standard&lat=50.229253567779956&lon=19.033384323120117&zoom=14 https://www.google.com/maps/@50.2446772,18.9878837,488m/data=!3m1!1e3

Week 4 Goal

Animate the scene. I would like to try sending more than one train on the tracks. OR Improve the graphics, find some free 3D models on the internet.
