March push to Support Job seekers

Zi_Sakura Education and Career DK30 New Year 2023 4 3

Description

With all the layoffs, particularly in tech and the SF Bay Area, as well as the plethora of job seekers who attended a free Product Manager Job Fair that I was a panelist on for the SF Job Forum late February, I am dedicating March to work on more personal initiatives that can help job seekers. I will be targeting a few specific goals. These include: Volunteer with Job Forum as a panelist for their free events as often as possible during the month, respond to individuals who request support for their job search at a reasonable time (within 1 week), expand the free resources on my Notion Portfolio (write X articles), and get work done on events I am planning for later this year (a First Generation Professional panel and a Data Center Careers panel). I will also make sure at the end of the month, before I wrap up the project, I submit all of my qualifying volunteer hours to the work volunteer portal, where I can get some company contributed funds to donate back to the Job Forum and any non-profit organizations listed in the portal that do good in the world. I will commit 1 hour of work on average each day to this work. Since now approved by daymods, my free Notion page with resrouces can be accessed and shared at https://tinyurl.com/resourcesjobsearch

Project Completion Stats

  • As of 4/2/23, I’ve done my best and followed up with everyone that I saw I could help or contacted me for assistance, and at least responded to them and threw the ball in their court in terms of next steps
  • https://tinyurl.com/resourcesjobsearch is forever available for dayknights to access in the pinned post of the #eduaction-n-career channel in the discord, and I’ve been keeping the document updated with new resources that come my way.

Looking Forward

  • In Q2, Must prioritize planning Q3/Q4 events for the Job Forum (Data Center panel and First Gen panel)
  • Article writing will be delayed until Q3/Q4 when I have time

Thoughts on Project

March has been such a busy month for me to keep on top of my regular work that sadly this project did still end up being deprioritized. I didn’t get to complete the article that I wanted to write, but I do have data on what article I should write (it’s all of the ones I proposed below), so I can get started whenever I am able to.

Helping people find good work is a continuous project and I am glad that I took the opportunity of capturing how work there is to do for this on this DK30. I am glad I have made a resource that allows me to share more resources easily, and look forward to sharing it with anyone searching for work. Hopefully when the next DK30 rolls around, I can create a more focused DK30 that helps me tackle a specific thing that is high priority that I am usually unable to get to, like doing work on planning for the panel or writing X articles specifically)

Committing 1 hour daily to this project is not reasonable. I’d rather do this project in sprints and get a bunch done at once when I am feeling like it.

These past 2 weeks have been BUSY. I am glad my other project of keeping up with the fitness is going super well, because that used to be so difficult for me. Before I get to this project, I do have to prioritize things like work I need to get done, taxes (even if there is an extension, I want to get that done), and self care necessary to not burnout (like 3 hours of unplanned Boneraiser Minions on Thursday night for that mental break).

I am reading Atomic Habits by James Clear with a book club at work, and I will try my best to use the skills I pick up from the book to find more time to do more of the things I love doing, like this project.

Small Success: I did once again catch up with helping everyone who has DMed for job seeking assistance on LinkedIn and other methods of communications. I did feel very guilty and sad that I completely forgot the one person who I DMed to help out in the Day9 Discord for their 30 day project =(. Definitely another reason to do a better job keeping track of things on my part, and also making sure that I don’t take on too much (as my manager always reminds me every week).

I will commit to 1 article before the end of the month and before Monday, i’ll update my resources page once more with all the new things that my communities have shared and posted. - DONE 3/20/23!

So stoked that my resource is now a pinned post in the education and career channel in the official day9 discord - find it here! I hope dayknights find it helpful!

ok today was a blur even though I took PTO, but tomorrow before work, I will post the draft description with my resource to the education and career chat and ping the dayMods, and I will also poll my LinkedIn about the resources I listed in my previous update. Sadly I don’t think I have time to do anything else, so I’ll just get to actually drafting this upcoming weekend.

  • Hooray! The trusty dayMods have approved me posting my free resource in the education and career channel and pinning it! I will be drafting the description shortly.

  • I am very proud of myself for doing the thing I said I’d do in yesterday’s update on recording volunteer hours, despite a very busy day at work =)

  • Given the rain today here and inspired by my attendance of the writing channel discord audio chat weekly meetup, where our dad and creator of weekly audio chat meet up Hrockle made an appearance, I’ll dedicate 1.5 hours today to the bullets related to ideating/brainstorming, and responding to all the LinkedIn questions and requests sitting in my inbox.

  • EDIT: Finished all the bullets that I wanted to do. Finished the brainstorming. Polling some communities on what would be most helpful.

  1. Processing emotions when getting laid off
  2. How to evaluate which job is right for you - identifying your deal makers and deal breakers
  3. Important things to do before leaving a job
  4. How to approach the job search - needs to be more specific but we can start here
  5. Why understanding yourself is the most important thing to finding a job

  • work is as hectic as it has been since i joined the company August. i’m going to get just a couple of easy steps done
  • I did the first bullet of Week 1 by asking in the #30-day-project chat.
  • I will now record my reportable volunteer hours in my notes on my work computer.
  • I am going to apply the mindset of if i finish 70% of every thing i planned for this project, I will count that as a resounding success.

  • Begin drafting 1 ideated article.
