Pirate Ship Coffee House and Library
Debrasaurus GameDev DK30 New Year 2023 1 1
Description
I have been working on a single level wave-based game for a while. This is the month to add the last feature(a pirate attack), polish it, do a final round of playtesting/bug fixing and create a gameplay trailer.
Recent Updates
The finish line!! Yesterday I made a gameplay trailer! It probably is not good, but I made it and I am proud of it! I have playtesters on board. For my progress celebration(week 4, step 5) I made and ate a giant cinnamon roll while drinking a cup of tea. I would like to shout out the Melatonin original game soundtrack(the whole game is really fantastic) for being soothing while I learned about fonts, trailers and everything else to finish this project. Anyway thanks for being here!
Soooo it turns out you could easily spend most of a day learning how to make custom fonts to import into Unity. I am excited that I learned something new! I did finish playing through myself to look for bugs and have built the webgl version. I also realized the reason I did not initially have standalone build in my week 4 goal was because I expect to make very minor changes when people playtest (which seems very common) so I am going to remove that from the week 4 goals until playtesting is complete.
Hello! It is the end of monday of week 4 and I think I squashed all of the bugs from Friday afternoon. I want to play through one more time tomorrow morning to be sure and then I can deploy the web build and get on with the rest of week 4. It was interesting to see the difference between my Friday-afternoon brain’s ability to solve problems versus Monday- morning brain. So that was a great reminder about rest. I do think I should add 1 more thing to the week 4 goal and that is to make a standalone exe file of the game. Overall happy to be here getting things done! Happy week 4!
a twist! I’m using the modulo operator to check if the player has earned enough gold to spawn powerups in the game. One of the mechanics of the game is collecting tea or coffee from a teapot (or coffeepot) and delivering them to the customers that spawn. If the order is incorrect the player loses money and if they repeated deliver the wrong item their gold will go to 0, which passes the modulo check to spawn powerups. I was going to change it but then decided if the player is having such a rough go of it that they have 0 gold then more power(ups) to them.
Ahoy! It is the end of week 3. I finalized the art, and visuals. The game has a name. I uncovered some bugs during the play through that I was not able to fix today. On Monday I will fix the remaining bugs and do another play through before building/deploying and moving onto the week 4 goals. Have a good weekend!
Top of week 3! Today I finished the two items added from last week- cannonball sound effects and tutorial information about the build phase. Tomorrow I will work on final art. Happy Monday!
Hello! It is the end of week 2 and I am thrilled to say I have completed my week 2 goals! I added player tasks to the build phase in the form of tea leaves and coffee beans for the player to collect and deliver to the teapot and coffee pot. There is a rough draft UI border on the screen during the build phase of the game. I had a few unexpected hiccups this week that left me with less time than I anticipated and had to make a tough choice this morning for the pirate attack. I decided to make it something I could get done in one day so the pirate attack is a series of randomly timed cannonballs (from imaginary rival pirate ships) that the player dodges while they are going about these refilling tasks. It isn’t the most elegant design but I am proud of my decision to pivot and complete something today instead of dragging it out into next week. The cannonballs have a particle effect when they crash into something but they do not have a sound effects yet either for the launch or crash so those will need to happen next week. As well as some sort of overlay tutorial image informing the player about the pirate attack. I did find it very motivating to know that I would come back here to write this update at the end of the week.
tl;dr week 2 goals accomplished. Add cannonball sounds and tutorial info to week 3 goals.
I just made my DK30 project today on the 7th of the month so the week 1 tasks have already been completed. Hoping to report back that week 2 tasks are finished soon!
