Alpha Builds for Project Codes Light and Dark

Ismortah GameDev DK30 Fall 2023 0 0

Description

My project goal is to create Alpha Builds for 2 board games under development (project codename Light and project codename Dark), create a matrix of game mechanics with conditions to test, and then execute the testing plan. The purpose using DK30 is as a motivational tool to get this done and to obtain enough data from my testing so I do not have to build more prototype versions of my game for approving core mechanics. Future post-Alpha builds will have art and will be more for the purposes of usability/color/component testing. The incentive is to “prove the fun” before I invest money into the projects.

Recent Updates

12/31 - My last update for the project and the year. Making the final tweaks to design pre-Alpha build for Project Light and game data gathering for my kitty board game tribute. Both Project Light and Dark will have Alpha testing and new builds made in the beginning of the new year.

12/25 - Merry X-mas! Working on a board game tribute for my kitty today, which will actually be using the same game system as Project Light. Still on track for finalizing EOY alpha designs.

12/18 - Dealing with kitty final days all last week. Will extend the project goal till end of month to complete the game mechanics pass and any Alpha Build updates for Project Light. Life happens. Will make both builds for each project by New Years. The testing matrix, and performing testing will be removed from scope for this DK30.

12/12 - Finally shifted to Project Light. I know this event has been Project Dark heavy, but it needed the most love (and now the build is ready to test). Again working on design and new pass at mechanics. Will extend timeframe to a Week 5 Goal of next Tuesday to update Project Light. Developing testing matrices for both will be the following week so I can test over the holiday break.

12/10 - Happy with my progress this weekend! Did not create the testing matrix for Project Dark…but I had such great iteration on the design that I am really pleased where it’s at. Focused on the fun and found a way to make it work instead of compromising. Matrix and constructing the build I will do end of month. For Project Light, re-evaluating the design and reviewing game mechanics will be next week.

12/7 - Made some more tweaks to gameplay for Project Dark. Still working on the matrix to test. Honestly its like I am “testing” the game just doing my review pass…which is a good thing! My new modified goal for both projects due to time is to get them in a state to test with the matrices ready by the end of DK30. This way I have through the end of year to run the tests. Project Light again has an Alpha build ready, I just in similar fashion want to do a review pass and create a testing matrix early next week. Project light is much further along.

12/1 - Finishing the matrix of what I need to test this weekend for Project Dark. Also designed a more portable version of my Alpha build (smaller then actual game space) so easier to iterate.

11/26 - Currently making the Alpha build for Project Dark. Had some last minute game tweaks I wanted to make. Project Light Alpha good to go. Next week will put together the testing matrix before the weekend so I can test the next two weekends.

11/23 - Finishing review of game mechanics to run with and will build the Alpha of Project Dark tomorrow (Project Light Alpha build already exists). Will then spend the weekend creating the testing matrix for both.

11/19 - Reviewing my game mechanic notes line by line and finding stuff that I need to account for in the UI space for Project Dark. Goal to knock my review out today so I have Mon/Tues for Project Light game mechanics review. Project Light is already in a good spot for what makes it fun.

11/16 - Currently looking at Project Dark focusing on what makes the game fun and what unfun pitfalls to avoid. Game already has mechanics/general UI template and planned components ready to go. I just need to ensure from a player-buyer why I would want this game. This is really the most important part…what makes you excited to play the game and what things would detract you (to the smallest degree even) from not liking the game.
