Can't stop won't stop crew, Java semester 2!
UsedToVenom Education and Career DK30 Fall 2023 0 0
Description
This is a continuation of the “Get that code skill my dude” project. Since this first one was such a success, I will continue working with the second semester of the mooc.fi course. A critical factor is still having realistic expectations, not getting discouraged and having fun while learning to code. Since I’m unsure of what is scheduled for semester 2 my objectives will be in lessons finished and not specific skills that I will learn.
Recent Updates
Day 30
In a spectacular finale, I’ve managed to finish week 11. Last exercise was fun, a bit challenging, I can clearly see that I need to practice more with the knowledge I’ve acquired to strengthen it in my memory, but at this point I already can recall more complex things and know where to find them (curse you new Scanner(Paths.get(filename)). I even got to talking about my code with a friend who works with Java daily. yay!
Project completed, will take a couple of days off before moving to month 3, might cheat and take an early lead before Monday.
GLHF
Day 29
I’m 4 four-point exercise away from finishing week 11, no bonus points. This last month was a bit rougher than I expected, a lot of things have happened and the daylight saving time change screwed with me heavily. I’ll finish the last task tomorrow and take a couple of days off - start to read the book I ordered some… 3 weeks ago, and was late to a friend’s party because I NEEDED TO PICK IT UP ASAP… and didn’t start reading. Anyway, however you look at it Project 2 is shaping up to be a moderate success. Part 3 will include physical exercise and other extracurricular activities. Stay Honest.
Day 26
Mid way through week 11. Work progresses slower, not sure if it’s the weather, the stress about health of family members… But I made a choice to relax with section 2 this evening instead of diving into easier stuff like netflix or factorio. good job me.
Day 23
So factorio never goes on sale… meaning I bought it at full price.
Finished week 10, started on week 11. I think I’m still on track to meet the milestones, but the homefront is taking some unexpected damage. Don’t force it, take your time. Just DON’T STOP
Day 19
Started playing Factorio demo on steam, ate a bit into sleep time… this game is WAY cool I need to snatch it on sale. Good motivator as an indie gem, I could be writing games like that in the future!
Started later but did good on working towards finishing week 10. Got through regexes (me likey) enums and iterators, leaving the last 6 point exercise for tomorrow because I’m eager to knock it out of the park. Spoke with a friend who works as a Java dev on some of the thing he actually works with - what collections are most used and such. Also used a friend as a rubber ducky because she was unavailable and she’s a BOSS when it comes to like IT stuff, I don’t know she’s Big Data this, and magic something that, she’s too good for me to understand but yeah… I got to it myself in the end :D but it feels good to have someone on your side who can help from time to time.
CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP ON TOUR!!
Day 18
Today is the bounce back day! Yesterday was very rough, decided to take the next 2 days off from work to look after my family and myself. Took a meditative, semi-conscious look at my fears, got them in line.
Finished with section 2 of week 10, only 3 large exercises left, worth almost 50% of the point value! gonna be a doozy. Had an idea for a fighting/rhythm game, should be easy to implement the basic game loop for it at the end of the course! might be fun!
Day 16
It’s a rough time, some sickness in the family, has me on edge. Rough at work too. It was difficult to sit down today, but I pulled through. Didn’t pressure much, took a lot of breaks, finished section 1 of week 10, done with 10 out of 17 exercises for it. Working with files using streams, I feel I need more hands-on work to be sure I got it right. ChatGPT is helping with explanations. Might do some tests in IntelliJ myself to see how reading files works with examples.
never give up, never surrender.
Day 12
Yesterday got knocked out by a stress induced headache and didn’t do anything afterwards. Today we traveled to family for all-saint’s day. Thankfully the family is tech-savvy and didn’t have anything against me sitting and doing some exercises ;) Didn’t do much, but worked through a couple of stream exercises, learned new commands. Next one is a fun one for 7 points - refactor code from older exercise to remove all for and while loops and replace them with stream expressions. Sounds interesting!
See you tomorrow choombas!
Day 10
Rough and stressful day at work, had to take a nap after to balance the vibe. Took some time before bed to read, do 2 exercises and experiment. Chat GPT was kind enough to explain some things as well. I’m learning to handle streams and write lambda expressions. I also learned a bit about stack memory and heap memory? good times.
big love
Day 9
Celebration! last week was very busy for non-project reasons, spent 4 days traveling and didn’t find the time to work on this… work was kind of stressful as well. I’ve spent yesterday decompressing but today oh joy, f*ck it all, I’m taking my time with my code!
love you all
edit: finished all of section 9! Too bad I lost some of the days last week, the “chugga chugga” was more difficult today, but I’m happy. Gonna do some work work now
Day 3
Yesterday was very busy due to responsibilities I’ve had at home, couldn’t squeeze learning in. In addition to that I’m struggling to get my sleeping in A+ order like I did for the first part of the course… improving on that. I’ve introduced a 4pm coffee today for the first time as an afternoon powerup.
5:30 - starting the second (third) day.
CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP
edit: did 3 exercises, these take a bit more time…also…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAY[9]tv! 15 years, wow, it went just like That! to the next 15! cheers!
Day 1
Ok, I cheated, I started with a couple of tasks last week when I was supposed to be taking a break. Sue me! Today I finished all exercises for Week 8. They are starting to get more flex-worthy, so I’ll look into getting that GIT tomorrow if time permits. I have a couple of people that need my care and work is piling… but today was fine and fun!
On a related note, I finished playing Supraland today! A wonderful game written by a single guy! If he can do it, so could I! keep it up!
Estimated Timeframe
Oct 21st - Nov 21st
Week 1 Goal
Complete Week 8 and if time permits, get a GIT going for the 2nd semester course exercises.
Week 2 Goal
Complete week 9 and get a heads start on week 10 - Week 9 is inheritance and polymorphism, concepts that I’ve worked on in my previous courses so should be able to get through that fast.
Week 3 Goal
Finish up week 10. You’re doing good, you’re half way there and there is a GUI class in week 13!
Week 4 Goal
Complete week 11 and get bonus points for moving in to week 12.
